MANILA---THE Philippine chess team thwarted Serbia 2 to claim its third win, 3.5-0.5, in the FIDE Chess Olympiad for People with Disabilities at the Belgrade's Crown Plaza Hotel Wednesday in Belgrade, Serbia.
The Nationals had a good start at the get go of the game. Behind the sweet brilliant hands of Fide Master Sander Severino, National Master James Infiesto and National Master Darry Bernardo.
Severino sudued Mile Bjelanovic in 44 moves of Caro Kann defense on board one, Infiesto toppled Bulatovic in 57 moves of Bishop Opening on board three while Bernardo smashed Petrovic in 42 moves of Caro Kann defense.
Stefan Mitrovic split the point with National Master Henry Roger Lopez in 42 moves of Old Indian Defense on board two to prevent a possible shut-out loss of Serbia 2.
"Pag mag all males ang kalaban laro ulit ako. Pag may babae ang kalaban then si Cheyzer ang maglaro," said playing coach Infiesto.
With three wins for sixth match points, the James Infiesto-mentored Filipinos, whose campaign is being bankrolled by the Philippine Sports Commission, are still on top with a perfect six points along with powerhouses India and Poland.
India bested Israel, 3-1, while Poland nipped FIDE, 3.5-0.5.
The Filipinos will tackle Poland’s team of GM Marcin Tazbir, FM Marcin Molenda, Pawel Piekielny and Piotr Dukaczewski in the fourth round of this six-round tournament that gathered the top 26 teams in the globe via their average rating.-Marlon Bernardino-
