Nadera, Castellano, Suelo off to good start in Isabela By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Sun, 08 Jan 2023 MANILA---International Master Barlo Nadera, Fide Master Christopher Castellano and Fide Master Robert Suelo Jr. got off to a blazing start by posting victories in the second round of the Isabela Chess Club Inc. 1st FIDE Rated Chess Tournament on Saturday, January 7 at the 4th Floor Municipal Building Magsaysay in Alicia, Isabela. Nadera defeated reigning Asian Seniors 65 over category champion International Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad, Castellano beat International Master Joel "Cholo" Banawa while Suelo subdued Alvin Aguinaldo. “The first two rounds is one of the toughest rounds in any tournament. It usually sets the tone of how you’re going to perform,” said the 1996 Philippine Junior Champion Suelo. "We hope to perform well in this event and gain some ElO rating points," Nadera said for his part. Earlier, Nadera smashed Lordwin Espiritu in the first round, Castellano toppled Lionel Cerezo while Suelo crushed Anwar Cabugatan. International Master Chito Garma and Candidate Master Genghis Katipunan Imperial also opened with a draw and wins. Garma split the points with Jirah Floravie Cutiyog in the first round then trounced Servillano Obana in the second round while Imperial drew with Obana then nipped Cutiyog, respectively. It is a seven round Swiss system format, 90 Minutes plus 30 seconds increment according to Tournament director FA Ronnie Tabudlong, Chief Arbiter FNA Sheryll A. Bordon and Deputy Chief Arbiter FNA John Robert B. Bumatay. The event is supported by Mr. Eduardo Aradanas of Las Vegas, Nevada, Engr. Pepito Castellanes of Denver Colorado, Engr. Amor Simplina of Managua, Nicaragua, Engr. Arthur Simplina of Dublin , Ohio and Mayor Atty. Joel Amos P. Alejandro , CPA of Alicia, Isabela. Aside from the title, the 1st FIDE Rated Chess Tournament organized by Isabela Chess Club Inc. (ICCI), affiliated by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) offers a trophy and certificate plus P15,000 plus prize to the top winner. The second placer will get P7,000 plus trophy and certificate, third P5,000 plus trophy and certificate, fourth P3,000 plus trophy and certificate and fifth P2,000 plus trophy and certificate.
