PH bet "MJ" Bacojo finishes second in Hongkong chess tilt By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Tue, 03 Jan 2023 MANILA---National Master Mark Jay "MJ" Daños Bacojo of the Philippines finished in second place at the Hongkong Bauhinia U-18 Invitational Chess Championships. Bacojo had five wins, one draw and a loss at the end of the four-day (Dec. 27-30) FIDE standard tournament that ended last Friday at the Regal Oriental Hotel, Kowloon City, Kowloon, Hong Kong. The 16-year-old Bacojo, a Grade 11 student of Dasmariñas Integrated Highschool, defeated Yen-Hsiu Elliot Wong of Singapore in the first round, Jamison Edrich Kao of Hongkong in the second round, ACM Hungi Yun of Korea in the third round, Shun Him Leung of Hongkong in the sixth round and Ayana Nicole Usman of the Philippines in the seventh and final round. He drew with Isaak Huh of Korea in the fourth round but was beaten by Yiheng Li of Hongkong in the fifth round. Despite the loss to Bacojo in the opening round, Wong took the title plus the top purse of 15,000 Hongkong dollars plus trophy and the gold medal after winning six straight matches. Bacojo, on the other hand, received the runner-up prize of 7,000 Hongkong dollar plus a silver medal. “We are very happy with the results na 2nd Place si MJ. Sayang kinulang ng kalahating puntos para sa titulo pero overall maganda ang naging performance niya,” said national coach Fide Master Roel Abelgas who thank mayor Jenny Barzaga and Rep. Elpidio "Pidi" Barzaga Jr. for supporting their local and international chess campaign. Making it to the list of top ten performers were Yun (third), Jiu Yarng Clarance Foo of Malaysia (fourth), Li (fifth), Zong Ze Cheah of Malaysia (sixth), Usman (seventh), Huh (eight), Leong (ninth) and Giuk Han of Korea (tenth).
