MASAM SPORTS 75: TERENCE CRAWFORD FACES DAVID AVANESYAN ON DECEMBER 10 By Maloney L. Samaco PhilBoxing.com Sun, 23 Oct 2022 Terence Crawford, the undefeated WBO welterweight champion declared that his advertised fight with David Avanesyan would not surprise Premier Boxing Champions chief Al Haymon or Errol Spence Jr. Crawford said on ESPN that he discussed with them several times that he would fight before the end of this year, whether it will be against Spence or if not with another opponent. * * * Crawford told ESPN's Mike Coppinger that he will fight in a voluntary defense of his WBO welterweight title against Avanesyan on December 10 at the CHI Health Center in Crawford’s home Omaha, Nebraska. * * * Crawford admitted he really wanted to fight Spence in a showdown which would have been the biggest boxing match aside from stars of the heavyweight division. Crawford (38-0, 29 KOs), age 35 years, was guaranteed an eight-figure purse for the fight with Avanesyan, according to ESPN, and he plans to renegotiate the Spence unification fight next year. * * * “I’m excited about this opportunity,” Crawford was quoted by ESPN. “I was really looking forward to the Errol Spence fight. I started communicating with Al Haymon and PBC back in June. And unfortunately, they represent a fighter in Errol Spence who didn’t want the fight as bad as I did.” * * * “I agreed to all of their bullsh!t and they’ve been dragging their ass for months,” Crawford said. “Spence was nowhere to be found while I was trying to make the deal. I explained to Al Haymon and Errol that I was going to fight before the end of the year. … David Avanesyan is a very tough task. He’s knocked out his last six opponents and this guy is dangerous. Once I’m successful against Avanesyan, my plan is still the same – whoop Errol Spence’s ass.” * * * The 34-year-old Avanesyan (29-3-1, 17 KOs), born in Pyatigorsk, Russia, now residing in England, recently won six straight fights, all by knockout, since he was stopped by Lithuania’s Egidijus Kavaliauskas in the sixth round in February 16, 2018 in Reno, Nevada. * * * Crawford downed Kavaliauskas (23-2-1, 18 KOs) three times en route to a ninth-round TKO win in December 14, 2019 at Madison Square Garden in New York. * * * Avanesyan has held the European welterweight title since 2019 and previously the WBA Regular welterweight title in 2017 and previously the interim title from 2015 until he was promoted. * * * Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown again led the Boston Celtics to a 111-104 victory over the Miami Heat on Friday. Tatum, who scored 35 points in Boston’s season-opening triumph of Philadelphia on Tuesday, topscored for 29 points as the Celtics routed their Eastern Conference rivals in Miami, Florida. Brown, who also tallied 35 points in Tuesday’s win over the Sixers, supported Tatum with 28 points. * * * The Boston Celtics concluded their two-game Florida road trip on Saturday night, with an exciting hard-fought win over the Orlando Magic, 126-120. The Magic threatened the Celtics with their booming treys. The Celtics were carried again by Tatum who had a 40-point explosion. His 15 first-quarter points were the most points he ever had in that period in the NBA. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Maloney L. Samaco. |
