MASAM SPORTS 70: JADE "HURRICANE" BORNEA WILL SHOOT FOR THE WORLD TITLE

PhilBoxing.com

Top IBF super flyweight contender Jade “Hurricane” Bornea completely dominated Ivan Meneses Flores of Mexico on Saturday in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. He stopped the Mexican journeyman in the seventh round of their non-title bout.

The 27-year-old Bornea outclassed his foe right from the opening bell sometimes scoring at will to the head and body of the Puebla, Puebla, Mexico native who suffered the 23rd loss of his career with 19 wins with 2 draws and 11 KO wins. He increased his losing streak to nine bouts.

Bornea maintained his immaculate record which is now 18-0 with 12 knockouts as he ended the fight after landing a solid right straight to the head then a devastating hook to the body as Meneses dropped to the canvas. The Mexican was hurt and the referee stopped the contest via a technical knockout.

“Meneses was very strong. He was bigger. I was hurting him with my sharp body shots. It eventually paid off and I got the stoppage win. This win gave me enough confidence to be ready for the big names in my division. Martinez, Ioka, Franco, whoever wants to dance with me in the ring, I’m ready to face them! Props to my team for the great support”, Bornea was quoted by PhilBoxing.com.

Bornea will shoot for a world title against IBF super flyweight champion Argentina’s Fernando Martinez, who wrested the title via an upset unanimous decision over then world titlist Jerwin Ancajas last February 26 with the scores of 117-111, 118-110, and 118-110. Martinez and Ancajas are scheduled to face in a rematch on October 8.

Bornea is the No. 1 IBF super flyweight contender. He is also rated No. 12 by the WBC, No. 11 by the WBA, and No. 14 by the WBO.

The WBO champion is Kazuto Ioka of Japan, Joshua Franco of San Antonio, Texas is the WBA regular champion, while Juan Francisco Estrada of Mexico is the WBA Super and WBC champion.

The 32-year-old Meneses Flores however showed some good boxing as he pinned Bornea against the ropes and landed some sharp combinations in the third and fourth rounds.

But it was Bornea who displayed persistent aggression and threw the more lethal punches that convinced the judges to put him ahead in the score cards.

Bornea was born in Arakan, Cotabato del Norte, but grew up in General Santos City.

He joined the 2012 AIBA Youth World Championships but lost to Murodjon Akhmadaliev of Uzbekistan, 14-25, in the quarter finals of the light flyweight class.

Bornea made his professional debut against Alberto Muring on October 11, 2014, winning by a fourth-round technical knockout. Bornea then went on a 4–0 streak before facing Ronnie Sunido for the vacant MinProBA super flyweight title and won by a first-round knockout, stopping Sunido with four seconds left right in the first round.

Bornea seized his first major regional title, the IBF Youth super-flyweight title when he dominated Raul Yu of Buenavista, Agusan del Norte, by unanimous decision, with scores of 98–92, 97–93 and 97–93.

Bornea then made his first IBF Youth super flyweight title defense against Samuthra Sitharan of Bangkok, Thailand on September 9, 2017, winning the fight by a fourth-round technical knockout.

Bornea fought Danrick Sumabong of Tagbilaran City, Bohol, and grabbed the WBO Oriental Youth super-flyweight title on April 28, 2017 by unanimous decision, 97–93, 96–94 and 96–94.

Bornea faced Ernesto Delgadillo of Dallas, Texas, USA for the WBC-NABF super-flyweight title on 30 January 30, 2020 and won the fight by split decision, 96-93, 96-93 and 93-96.

Bornea faced Mohammed Obbadi of Casablanca, Morocco in an IBF title eliminator on January 14, 2022, at the Auditorio Jacales in Monterrey, Mexico. He won the fight by a third-round knockout of Obbadi at 2:25 of the round. Bornea was ahead 39–36, 40–35 and 39–36 on the judges' scorecards when the fight was stopped.
