MARIKINA CITY---Last-minute entry National Master Almario Marlon Quiroz Bernardino Jr. finished the 11-Round tournament, 12 player's single round robin, 10 minutes plus 5 seconds increment time control format undefeated to go home with the title as the champion of the First Ever Avocadoria FIDE Rated Rapid Chess Tournament in Avocadoria Rainbow, Marikina City last Friday, July 29, 2022.

Bernardino, an incoming chess coach of the multi-titled Rizal Technological University Mandaluyong City chess team who started his campaign well, finished solo champion with 9.0 points after eleven rounds and bagged the top prize of P1,000, certificate plus a trophy and Avocadoria stuffed toy.

It was Bernardino’s monumental win over Rolly Jon Baliwang in Round 8 that catapulted him to the victory with three rounds left in the tournament.

Bernardino, an employee of the Philippine Racing Commission (PHILRACOM) under the guidance of chairman Reli de Leon defeated Elize Caryl Cafirma (Round 1), Jerico Bello (Round 2), Andro Huerto (Round 4), Justin Bryan Chong (Round 5), Elizsa Gayle Cafirma (Round 6), Baliwang (Round 8) and Michael Joshua Broqueza (Round 11).

He split the point with Joshua Vila (Round 3), Donato Bello Jr. (Round 7), Mar Aviel Carredo (Round 9) and Gerald Gas (Round 10).
" I didn't expect to win this tournament because Iam only the last-minute replacement of lawyer Rodolfo Enrique "Kopiko Kopiko" Rivera who fail to participate in this FIDE 12 player's single round robin event," said Bernardino, a 1999 Rakan Muda Grand Asian Chess Challenge Inter-Collegiate bronze medallist in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and the 2005 Arlington Virginia, USA Champion.
Bernardino is a veteran sports writer and radio commentator who always cover chess and billiards event.

Tournament Director was Donna De Guzman Apolinar, supervised by National Arbiters Ranier Pascual and Roberto Racasa of the Philippine Arbiters Chess Confederation (PACC) and sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines headed by chairman/president Prospero "Butch" Arreza Pichay Jr.-Marlon Bernardino-
