GM Antonio rules GM Balinas Negros Open Chess Tournament By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Mon, 18 Apr 2022 Final Standings (After 8 rounds, GM Antonio beat Asuela in the Armageddon tie breaker to capture the title) 7.5 points---GM Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. 7.5 points---Ellan Asuela 6.5 points---FM Alekhine Nouri 6.5 points---Allan Cantonjos MANILA, Philippines – Grandmaster (GM) Rogelio “Joey” Antonio, Jr. of Quezon City dominated the 2022 Grandmaster Rosendo Carreon Balinas Jr. Negros Oriental Open Chess Tournament that was held at the Lamberto Macias Sport Complex in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental on Sunday. Antonio defeated Ellan Asuela of Bacolod City in the Armageddon tie breaker to capture the title and the top prize worth P10,000. Asuela, on the other hand pocketed the runner-up prize of P7,000. Antonio and Asuela had to go to Armageddon tie breaker after both tallied 7.5 points in 8 outings in the 2 day (April 16 and 17) event which attracted 98 woodpushers, hosted by Governor Roel Ragay Degamo in close cooperation with PhD CPA Ariel Potot of Barkadahan Para sa Bansa Party list and Mam Jeanshen "Shen" Rosalem, backed up by Dr. Jose "Joe" Carreon Balinas and Engr. Antonio "Tony" Carreon Balinas, both co-founding chairman of Bayanihan Chess Club. Antonio bested Bonn Rainauld Tibod of Toledo City while Asuela toppled National Master Rommel Ganzon of Mandaue City. Fide Master Alekhine Nouri of Escalante City was the 3rd placer, Allan Cantonjos of Gingoog City finished in 4th place while Ganzon landed at 5th place. Rounding up to the top 15 were Tibod (sixth), National Master Alvin Alcala (seventh), Bryle Arellano (eight), National Master Merben Roque (ninth), John Vandam Gutib (tenth), Ted Ian Montoyo (eleventh), Johnnel Balquin (twelve), Van Opada (thirteen), Christopher Tubalado (fourteen) and Aldwin Daculan (fifteen).
