Quizon keeps lead in 2021 Philippine National Chess Championship By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Sat, 11 Dec 2021 Standings after round 3: 3 points---IM Daniel Quizon 2.5 points---IM Paulo Bersamina , IM Ricardo de Guzman 1.5 points---GM Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr., IM Jan Emmanuel Garcia, IM Ronald Dableo, WGM Janelle Mae Frayna 1 point---IM Joel Pimentel, IM John Marvin Miciano, GM Darwin Laylo 0.5 point---Allan Pason, IM MIchael Concio Jr. MANILA---International Master Daniel Maravilla Quizon defeated Grandmaster Darwin Laylo to remain on top after three rounds of the 2021 Philippine National Chess Championship (Barkadahan Para sa Bansa) FIDE-rated over-the-board Chess Championships held at the Solea Hotel and Resort in Mactan, Cebu on Friday. Playing white, the Dasmarinas City, Cavite bet Quizon prevailed after 49 moves of Ruy Lopez Opening in the tough, 12-player-field, single-round tournament organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP). The win enabled Quizon to keep solo lead with 3 points, just a half-a-point ahead of IM Paulo Bersamina and IM Ricardo de Guzman. Bersamina toppled Allan Pason after 46 moves of Caro-Kann defense while De Guzman subdued International Master Joel Pimentel after 49 moves of Trompovsky Opening. Woman Grandmaster Janelle Mae Frayna notched her third consecutive draw against International Master John Marvin Miciano after 30 moves of French defense to raise her total 1.5 points, the same output of GM Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr., IM Jan Emmanuel Garcia and IM Ronald Dableo. Antonio halved the point with Dableo after 37 moves of King's Indian attack while Garcia toppled IM Michael Concio Jr. after 32 moves of Dutch defense. The six-day event was being bankrolled by PSC chair Butch Ramirez, NCFP president Rep. Butch Pichay, POC president Rep. Bambol Tolentino, Chess Movement Chairman Dr. Ariel Potot, PCSO vice chair and general manager Royina Garma and Atty. Roel Canobas.
