PhilBoxing.com

Despite playing with slight fever after having the Covid vaccine injection, two-time Asian junior champion Grandmaster Rogelio "Banjo" Barcenilla Jr. lead Laguna Heroes to team victory in the All Filipino Conference Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) after defeating Quezon City Simba's Tribe in the night’s main event 19-2, in the battle of the Northern Divisions on Wednesday (February 3, 2021) in the ongoing online tournament at the lichess platform.

The Arizona, USA based Barcenilla defeated Singapore based Fide Master Arlan Cabe after 37 moves of Ponziani Opening in the blitz portion and 62 pushes of Petroff Defense in the rapid play in the top board to secure the Heroes ninth victory against two loses.

"I've been so pleased with the spirit and attitude. GM (Rogelio Barcenilla) Banjo played with slight fever after having Covid vaccine injection," said Team Owner-Playing Coach Arena Grandmaster Dr. Alfredo "Fred" Paez.

Fide Master Austin Jacob Literatus, Woman National Master Karen Enriquez, Fide Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad, Grandmaster John Paul Gomez, Vince Angelo Medina and Kimuel Aaron Lorenzo survived a challenge from Simba's Tribe in the rapid format.
Literatus downed National Master Carlos Edgardo Garma on board 2, Enriquez subdued Michaela Concio on board 3, Bagamasbad trounced Danilo Ponay on board 4, Gomez waylaid Erwin Calar on board 5, Medina crushed Benjamin Lising on board 6 while Lorenzo nipped Joseph Navarro on board 7 to complete a shut-out win for Heroes in the rapid format.

Only Lising and Navarro were able to score for Simba's Tribe after beating Medina and Lorenzo in their blitz encounter.
Earlier, GM Barcenilla defeated International Master John Marvin Miciano, 2.5-0.5, to spearhead the Heroes, 11.5-9.5, victory over Manila Indios Bravos.

Also part of the Heroes were Candidate Master Arjie Bayangat (Player), Engineer Jonathan Mamaril (Team Owner/Consultant), Mr. Benjamin Dy (Team Owner/Consultant and Mr. David Nithyananthan (Team Owner/Manager).

The Laguna Heroes look to extend their winning streak Saturday night (February 6, 2021) when they face Cebu and Cordova.
Action will begin at 7PM with the Heroes facing the City Marchers first then the showdown against the Dutchess Dagami Warrios will be at 8:20PM.

Each player competes in blitz or rapid chess every match. A win in rapid chess is worth 2 points, while victory in blitz chess is 1 point. A draw in rapid chess is one point, while it's half a point in blitz chess.

The tournament is being sanctioned by the Games and Amusements Board (GAB), headed by Chairman Abraham “Baham” Mitra and supported by National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Chairman/President Rep. Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr.-Marlon Bernardino-
