Laguna Heroes beats Antipolo Cobras By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Thu, 28 Jan 2021 Laguna Heroes, led by two-time Asian Junior Champion Grandmaster Rogelio "Banjo" Barcenilla Jr., kept their winning ways, scoring an impressive 14-7 win over the Antipolo Cobras in the seventh match of the All Filipino Conference Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) Wednesday (January 27, 2021) online tournament at the lichess platform. The Arizona, USA based Barcenilla Jr. toppled United States chess master Jose "Jojo" Aquino Jr. in both blitz and rapid in the top board to secure the Laguna Heroes fifth victory against two loses. Fide Master Austin Jacob Literatus halved the point with United States chess master Rodolfo "Jun" Panopio Jr. in blitz but prevailed in rapid play on board two. Fide Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad defeated Martin "Binky" Gaticales in blitz but forced a draw in the rapid play on board four (senior). Grandmaster Joh Paul Gomez nipped Jude Ulanday in both blitz and rapid on board five (homegrown). Woman Candidate Master Christy Lamiel Bernales and Sonny dela Rosa carried the fight for Antipolo Cobras of Team Owner Mc Daniel Ebao and Coach Jason Rojo. Bernales beat Woman National Master Jean Karen Enriquez in both blitz and rapid on board three (female) while Dela Rosa upset Vince Angelo Medina on board six (homegrown). Kimuel Aaron Lorenzo of Laguna Heroes waylaid Edralin ' Chucky' Chua on board seven (homegrown). Chua also loss to Arena Grandmaster Arjie Bayangat in their blitz encounter as well Dela Rosa yielded to Lorenzo. Earlier, the Laguna Heroes headed by Team Owner-Playing Coach Arena Grandmaster Dr. Alfredo "Fred" Paez beat Pasig Kings Pirates, 12-9, Wednesday. Bagamasbad, GM Gomez and Medina trounced National Master Rudy Ibanez, Cromwell Sabado and Italy based National Master Exfelicos Bolico on board 4, 5 and 6 in the rapid format. Literatus, Enriquez and Lorenzo,meantime halving the point with Woman Fide Master Sherily Cua, International Master elect Eric Labog Jr., and Gerry Paul Nudalo on board 2, board 3 and board 7, respectively. Italy based Grandmaster Roland Salvador saved the day for the Pasig Kings Pirates after beating GM Barcenilla, both blitz and rapid format in their top board encounter. Other member of the Laguna Heroes are Team Owner/Consultant Engineer Jonathan Mamaril, Team Owner/Consultant Mr. Benjamin Dy and Team Owner/Manager Mr. David Nithyananthan. Based on the scoring system, a win in rapid chess is worth two points, a draw is one point and a loss is zero. Blitz chess result gives one point for a win, half point for a draw and zero for a loss. The tournament is being sanctioned by the Games and Amusements Board (GAB), headed by Chairman Abraham “Baham” Mitra and supported by National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Chairman/President Rep.
