LAURENTE WINS AS RUBILLAR QUITS! By Tam Almeda PhilBoxing.com Mon, 11 Feb 2008 RP No. 3 Bantamweight Monico Laurente won by TKO when opponent Roberto Rubillar suddenly quit before the start of the 5th round in their 10-round fight in the Super Bantamweight division last night. Johnny Elorde Management International, together with Phil Muay Thai Federation, presented the first ever ?Boxing & Professional Muay Thai Fights? held at the Flash Grand Ballroom, Elorde Sports Complex in Sucat, Para?aque City Saturday night. The crowd was stunned when Rubillar?s corner signaled to the referee that their fighter no longer wanted to continue. Rubillar complained to the referee that his left arm was hurt at the same time pointing to his stomach area. To this writer, Rubillar just wasn?t sure what excuse he?ll use for quitting. He was all smiles during the whole time. A fighter who?s really hurt wouldn?t have that luxury. The ring physician, who had her hands full with the fighter who got knocked out badly in an earlier fight and the immediately preceding fight where blood issued profusely from a fighter?s nose and later a cut on the check, wasn?t even asked to see Rubillar?s condition before he did his lousy version of ?no mas? (no more). The doctor saw no reason as well for her to check on Rubillar. While Ruberto Duran said ?no mas? in frustration when he could not land his vaunted ?hands of stone? on the elusive Sugar Ray Leonard, Rubillar was landing the more telling punches against Laurente. Acelino Freitas? ?no mas? was given the benefit of the doubt by the crowd as he was clearly a beaten fighter against now concurrent lightweight WBA/IBF/WBO champion Juan Diaz. But this was not the case of Rubillar who was leading in the scorecards. Although Laurente was the busier fighter, Rubillar?s good timing and accurate punching kept Laurente from his finding his rhythm. Rubillar landed the more solid and power punches. There was no sign that he was in pain when the 4th round ended. Laurente added a win in his record. A gift from the smiling yet supposed to be in pain Rubillar who seemed to show up only for the 10-rounder fight prize. This is the kind of fight Philippine boxing hardly needs. Other results: Hard hitting Jonathan Tacuning demolished opponent Bonbon Binculado in their 6-round fight in the flyweight division. The exchanges were furious to the delight of the crowd. Although there were no knockdowns, unusual for a Tacuning fight, Binculado got hurt and almost fell from a left straight to the chin in the 2nd round. As Binculado tried to recover, he was again hit with a similar left straight and would?ve fallen down the canvass had it not been for the ropes. Binculado was bleeding badly from the nose that prompted the referee to have the fighter checked by the ring physician twice. He was again checked before the start of the 4th round. The scores were 60 ? 54, 59 ? 55, and 60 ? 53 all for Tacuning. Rey Ramos overcame the knockdown he suffered in the 1st round from opponent Mike Romulo and was rewarded with a Unanimous Decision win in their 6-round fight in the super flyweight division. Ramos was caught off guard by a left straight to the chin but got busier from the 2nd onwards. The scores were 57 ? 56 and 58 ? 56 twice. Once again Jason Rotoni displayed his power with a KO win over opponent Manny Talisic. A hard body punch sent Talisic to the floor and was clearly seen grimacing in pain. He failed to get up as the referee reached the count of 10. The fight ended at 40? in the 1st of the scheduled for 6 in the light flyweight division. Joram Baller won by Unanimous Decision over opponent Jessie Cabales in their 4-round fight in the bantamweight division. Cabales almost fell in the 2nd from an uppercut to the chin. The scores were 39 ? 36, 39 ? 37, and 40 ? 36. Dondon Balongcas only had one type of attack ? the left wallop. But somehow opponent Alde Johnson failed to realize this as he kept on getting hit over and over in the head in their 4-round match in the 118lb division. It was a Majority Draw as a judge scored it 39 ? 37 for Balongas and the other two at 38 ? 38. Antonio Bonita won by TKO over opponent Freddie Gallega as the referee stopped the fight at 1?03? in the 1st when Gallega failed to retaliate against Bonita?s barrage of punches. The fight was scheduled for 4 rounds in the minimum weight division. A straight left to the head by Arwin Lasutan made sure Marlon Inosencio would never get up as the referee reached the count of 10 at 2?15?? in the 1st in their 4-round fight in the minimum weight division. It took a lot of time for Inosencio to recover as he was attended to by the ring physician and concerned officials. He was later rushed to the hospital to get an MRI. Elbert Guardario won by TKO over opponent Andro Oliveros as the referee stopped the fight when Oliveros was still clearly hurt after falling for the second time at 2?28?? in the 1st round. The fight was scheduled for 4 in the minimum weight division. The event featured two professional muay thai fights in the 130lb division. Hestoni ?The Fox? Haga scored a TKO win over Julito ?Tornado? Torlao with an elbow strike to the chin. The referee stopped the fight at 1?44?? in the 2nd of the 5-round fight. Jonar ?Slugger? Lagascar won by TKO when the ring physician signaled to the referee to stop the fight because his opponent, Michael ?Thunderheart? Bentican, got a large cut on his upper left eyebrow from an elbow strike. Elbows, knees and kicks are allowed in muay thai fights. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Tam Almeda. |
