FM David Elorta wins 2nd Canon Carlsen Kasparov Chess Club's Open Rapid chessfest

FIDE MASTER (FM) David Elorta reinforced his position as one of the Philippines? top chess players when he ruled the 2nd Canon Carlsen Kasparov Chess Club's Weekly Open Rapid Chess Tournament (Open division) dubbed as Imus Open Rapid Chess Championship at the City Mall along Aguinaldo Highway in Imus, Cavite on Sunday, October 21, 2018.

Elorta, a habitue of Tarrasch Knight Chess Club in Guadalupe Mall, collected 6.5 points on six wins and a draw to win the seven-round tournament going home with the top purse of P10,000 and a medal in the one-day event organized by Canon Carlsen Kasparov Chess Club headed by tournament director Priscilla "Ella" Tindero and assisted by arbiters Boyet Tardecilla, Israel Landicho, Byron Villar and Rey Jay Pascual in close cooperation with City Mall, Imus, Moulded Mind Chess Club and sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines.

Elorta scored victories over Clark Kaeron Kwan in the first round, Neil Conrad Pondoc in the second round, National Master Emmanuel Emperado in the third round, Gabriel Paril in the fourth round, Fide Master Nelson "Elo" Mariano III in the fifth round, Jerry Areque in the sixth round then halved the point with Mark Jay Bacojo in the seventh and final round.
Engineer Arjoe Loanzon placed second overall with 6 points on six wins and a loss to pocket P5,000 and a medal while Mark Jay Bacojo finish 3rd with 5.5 points to went home P3,000 and a medal.

Rounding up to the top 10 were Jones Maghuyop, National Master Roland Joseph Perez, International Master Barlo Nadera, Neil Conrad Pondoc, John Edieson Gerez, Jerry Areque and National Master Marlon Bernardino.

NM Perez, head coach of multi-titled Colegio de San Juan de Letran - Manila ruled the Under 2200 section along with Pondoc and Gerez while Maghuyop won the Under 2000 category together with Paril, Kwan, Rudolf Perez, Edwin Caballero, Vincent Bryan Paragas,Carlito Andres Jr., and Lorenzo Cochanco. IM Nadera didn't go home empty-handed winning the top senior award.

Meanwhile, John Lance Valencia topped the kiddies 12 years old and below after accumulating 5 points. Charles Darwin Nakila, Aaron Francis De Asas, Herson Bangay and Joel Sebastian finish tied for 2nd to 5th spots with 4 points.-Marlon Bernardino-
