DUNO DROPS AVILES ENROUTE TO CONVINCING WIN

PhilBoxing.com

Romero Duno (18-1, 14 KOs) floored Ezequiel Aviles (16-3-3, 6 KOs) three times, to gain a very convincing eight round unanimous decision win at the Fantasy Springs Casino, Indio, California. All the three judges scored it 78-71 for Duno in the lightweight bout.

Aviles was fresh from a 10th round TKO loss to Oliver Quintana, in May 2017 for the interim WBC FECARBOX super lightweight title. Duno has now won nine successive fights since losing an 8th round unanimous decision to Russian Mikhail Alexeev in May 2016 for the vacant WBO youth super featherweight title.

Duno of General Santos City tipped the scales at 134.4 lbs., while Aviles from Ensenada, Mexico was 134.6 lbs. during the official weigh-in.

In round one, Dino sent Avilez to the canvas with a perfectly timed short right uppercut. In round six, Duno connected a thundering right that again floored Avilez in a second knockdown. Then later it was a solid left hook that sent Avilez on the mat for the third knockdown.

In the main event, former three-division world champion Jorge Linares stopped Abner Cotto in the third round of the scheduled 12-round super lightweight bout at The Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California.

In the second round, Linares sent Cotto to the canvas with a strong right hand. In the third round, Linares landed another solid punch that sent Cotto down. Cotto continued fighting as Linares attacked Cotto and they both fell to ground. Cotto got up but wobbling into the ropes and the referee stopped the bout at 1:31 of the third round.

Looks like former world champion Amir Khan (33-4, 20 KOs) will not be fighting for the remaining months of 2018. According to his promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom, Khan's next fight is set to happen in February 2019.

In his latest fight , Khan was floored in the second round by the underdog Samuel Vargas, who also dominated the British fighter in the tenth round. Khan also scored two knockdowns of Vargas and took control of several rounds to snatch a unanimous decision win.

Khan is eyeing WBA "regular" welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao or fellow British foe Kell Brook. Both Pacquiao and Brook are targeting to fight before the yearend.

?We?re getting to a stage now where we?re nearly in October, he?s not in camp. I can?t tell you that we?re a week away from signing a deal with Brook or Pacquiao. So, unless we got something done this week, he would probably choose to go in February instead," Hearn told IFL TV.
