SPORTS TRIVIA 2: ANCAJAS FIGHTS SEVENTH WORLD TITLE BOUT AGAINST SANTIAGO

PhilBoxing.com

Jerwin Ancajas will defend his IBF super flyweight title against Alejandro Santiago Barrios at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California live on ESPN+. He promised to have a better performance in this fight. Coach Joven Jimenez said we will be more aggressive against Santiago because he really want to make up for the last fight against Jonas Sultan where he won just by a unanimous decision.

ABS-CBN fight analyst Ed Tolentino commented that Ancajas cannot be overconfident because the match with Santiago is supposed to be just a tuneup for bigger fights ahead, a chance for Ancajas to fine-tune his skills. But the Mexican foe Santiago is hungry for a world title, added Tolentino.

Jerwin Juntilla Ancajas was born January 1, 1992, has held the IBF junior bantamweight title since September 2016. He is ranked as the fifth-best junior bantamweight in the world by The Ring, third by theTransnational Boxing Rankings Board, and fourth by BoxRec.

"Pretty Boy" Ancajas is the first world champion promoted by MP Promotions of Senator Manny Pacquiao. Ancajas currently trains in his Survival Camp in Imus, Cavite.

Ancajas was born and raised in Panabo City, Davao del Norte. He won two national boxing championships and a gold medal at the 2008 Palarong Pambansa in Puerto Princesa. He has a 90-5 record as an amateur boxer.

Ancajas made his professional debut on July 2009 at the age of 17. He suffered his only loss in his fifteenth pro bout, a majority decision to Mark Anthony Geraldo. He had a 4th round technical draw with Ervin Yamo in a fight in Cebu City.

Ancajas has 32 professional fights with 30 wins, 20 wins by knockout, 1 defeat, 1 draw with 63% KO rate.

He became the IBF junior bantamweight champion when he prevailed over Puerto Rican McJoe Arroyo on September 3, 2016 in Taguig City. He just earned a purse of $3,750 for the fight. He entered the fight on an 11-fight winning streak. Jerwin simply outboxed and overpowered Arroyo, and floored him in the 8th round to win by a unanimous decision.

In his first defense on January 29, 2017, he defeated Mexican Jose Alfredo Rodr?guez by 7th technical knockout in Macao, China after Rodr?guez was unable to continue due to injury.

Ancajas made another successful defense on July 2017, on the undercard of Manny Pacquiao-Jeff Horn title fight against Japanese Teiru Kinoshita in Brisbane, Australia. Ancajas dropped him in round 7 with a right hook to the body for a TKO win.

On November 18, 2017, Ancajas defeated Jamie Conlan with a round 6 TKO in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Conlan was battered from the first round, going down after a body shot. He was dropped three more times until the referee stopped the fight.

On December 2017, it was announced that Ancajas had signed with Top Rank and made his U.S. debut in February 2018, defending his title against Israel Gonzalez in Corpus Christi, Texas. Ancajas retained his title after stopping the Mexican in the 10th round after he dropped Gonzalez three times.

Ancajas retained the IBF junior bantamweight crown by outpointing Jonas Sultan in their historic 12-round All-Filipino title fight, the first in 93 years. It was held in Fresno, California. The judges saw it 119-109, 119-109, 117-111 in favor of Ancajas.

At the weigh-in, Ancajas easily made the limit with 114.2 lbs while Alejandro Santiago tipped the scales at 114.6 lbs. The 26-year-old Ancajas stands 5'6" while the 22-year-old Santiago is 5'2 ?".
