NIETES EXTENDS LONG REIGN AS CHAMPION AND PLANS TO MOVE TO SUPERFLY

PhilBoxing.com

The longest reigning Filipino champion Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes did not fail the hordes of his American fight fans who witnessed Superfly 2 with a very impressive stoppage of his Argentinean challenger Juan Carlos Reveco in the 7th round of his IBF flyweight title defense at the Fabulous Forum in Inglewood, California.

Nietes used a methodical technique and established an early advantage over Reveco, using his 1-2 combination to penetrate his challenger?s fortification in the first few rounds. This exhausted Reveco and when he was slamed with a piercing right punch to the face near the end of the sixth round it was clear that the Argentine was agonizing. He wobbled as he went back to his corner.

The one-minute rest period was not enough for Reveco to delete the cobwebs on his head. Nietes charged on him at the start of the seventh round and exploded with a right hand that badly hurt him. Nietes then pounced him with three damaging body shots and a powerful left hand to the head to send him down to the canvas.

Reveco stood up to beat referee Eddie Hernandez Sr.'s count, but his corner threw in the towel to save him from further punishment and Hernandez stopped the fight at 53 seconds of the seventh canto.

?When I watched him going to his seat, he was groggy, and I wanted to finish him the next round," said Nietes referring to Reveco's reaction.

Nietes' record improves to 41 wins, one loss, and 4 draws with 23 KOs, while Reveco falls to 39 wins and four defeats, including 19 KOs.

?I?m happy because I had a sensational knockout,? exclaimed a joyous Nietes after the KO win. ?I think it was a perfect 10.? When asked on what?s next, the champ replied, ?Anybody. I just want to fight the big names out there. Whichever champion is going to come forward, I want the fight.?

?Whatever?s out there. Right now, I want to fight the big names out there. If there?s a huge fight at 112, I?ll stay at 112. If there?s a unification bout at 112. But if the big names are at super flyweight, I?ll move up to 115,? declared the ALA Gym world titlist.?[I want to fight] Chocolatito and whomever wins between Sor Rungvisai and Estrada.?

When asked if he is ready to fight IBF superflyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas, he answered, ?Right now, my stablemate Jonas Sultan is the mandatory to fight Jerwin Ancajas. So right now I?m not looking at Ancajas."

?I knew it was a huge fight. I prepared hard. I know people are always rooting for a knockout. It?s a good thing, I?m very happy,? he commented on his initial fight on HBO.

CompuBox showed how Nietes controlled the fight by landing 100 of 407 (25%) punches, and 77 of 258 (30%) power shots, compared to only 40 of 318 (13%) for Reveco, including 36 of 195 (18%) of his power punches.

Since he won the vacant WBO world minimumweight title over Thailand's Pornsawan Porpramook by unanimous decision on September 30, 2007, Nietes has been world champion for 10 years, 4 months, and 25 days during the victory over the Argetinean.

Thailand?s Srisaket Sor Rungvisai (45-4-1, 40 KOs) remains the world champion in the 115-pound division as he won a majority decision over Juan Francisco Estrada (36-3, 25 KOs) to retain his WBC title in the main event of Superfly 2.

A crowd of 7,827 jampacked The Forum in Inglewood, Calfornia and it surpasses the 7,418 that filled the StubHub Center for the first Superfly.

Ukranian Artem Dalakian remained undefeated after towering over Filipino-Hawaiian Brian Viloria (38-6, 23 KOs) to win the vacant WBA flyweight title. Dalakian (16-0, 11 KOs) won via a lopsided unanimous decision where all three judges scored 118-109.

Viloria is the second Filipino to be defeated by the hands of Dalakian. In 2013, Juan Ivan Purisima, then a fighter from the Guanzon Stable of Bacolod, lost to the Ukranian champion similarly by unanimous decision.
