DONAIRE IN CEBU TODAY FOR TRAINING By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Mon, 22 Oct 2007 CEBU CITY--IBF and IBO flyweight champion Nonito Donaire Jr is set to arrive in Cebu for the continuation of his training at the famed ALA Gym in preparation for his December 1 title defense against Mexican Luis "Titi" Maldonado in Mashantucket, Connecticut, USA. Donaire touches down 9AM at the Cebu-Mactan International Airport accompanied by his father/trainer Nonito Sr. Sportsman Antonio L. Aldeguer, owner of the ALA Gym, is set to meet the duo at the airport, after which the father-and-son tandem proceeds to Parklane Hotel, where Donaire is expected to grant an interview to FM Station Y101, their sponsor. The Donaires will be staying at the residence of US-based Jun Laquindanum at the gated Vista Grande Village during their month-long stay in Cebu. The 24-year-old Donaire will be making the first defense of his dual titles which he won with an easy fifth-round technical knockout victory over Vic Darchinyan last July 7. "We are very honored to be given the opportunity to train at the ALA Gym in Cebu, which is a highly-respected boxing facility in the country. We will be forever indebted to Mr. Aldeguer," said Donaire Sr in an e-mail. Cebu City Councilor Sylvan "Jack" Jakosalem has indicated that Donaire's choice of Cebu as his training ground is a welcome development for the city. Superstar Manny Pacquiao had also opted to train here for his rematch with Marco Antonio Barrera, which he won convincingly by decision. Donaire has started initial training at his base in San Leandro, California, but has decided to train in Cebu owing to the facilities available at the ALA Gym, as well as the abundance of possible sparring partners who can help the young champion in his war preparation. "It is our honor to welcome a world champ in our gym. We will do whatever it takes to give him the support he needs," said Aldeguer, who also manages WBO world champion Donnie Nietes.
