Wesley So draws Anand in round 12 By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Sun, 28 Jan 2018 MANILA, Philippines---Defending champion Filipino Grandmaster (GM) Wesley Barbasa So settled for a fighting draw against Indian GM Viswanathan Anand in the 12th round of the 2018 Tata Steel chess tournament being held in Hiversum, the Netherlands on Saturday. Handling the disadvantageous black pieces, the Bacoor, Cavite native So halved the point with Anand after 32 moves of Ruy Lopez Opening to raise his total 7.0 points, the same score of GM Sergey Karjakin of Russia. Karjakin split the point with GM Peter Svidler of Russia after 31 moves of Catalan Opening. So and Karjakin was tied at 6th to 7th place. Anand, meantime was tied with fellow 7.5 pointers GM Vladimir Kramnik of Russia for 4th to 5th place. Kramnik crushed GM Fabiano Caruana of the United States after 45 moves of Caro-kann defense. Three-time Tata Steel titlist World Champion GM Magnus Carlsen of Norway trounced GM Maxim Malatkov of Russia after 57 moves of Sicilian defense to remain on top with 8.5 points. GM Anish Giri of the Netherland defeated GM Baskaran Adhiban of India after 42 moves of Modern Benoni defense to share 2nd to 3rd places with fellow 8.0 pointers GM Shakhriyar Mamedyarov of Azerbaijan, who agreed a quick draw against GM Gawain Jones of Great Britain after 12 pushes of Petroff defense. According to National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Vice President Atty. Cliburn Anthony A. Orbe, the champion in the 13 round tournament will receive euros 10,000 while the runner-up place will get home euros 6,500.
