TOUGH FIGHTS AHEAD FOR JERWIN ANCAJAS By Rene Bonsubre, Jr. PhilBoxing.com Sat, 30 Sep 2017 BEIJING, CHINA ? IBF junior bantamweight world champ Jerwin Ancajas of the Philippines mingled with the Filipino boxers and the Chinese audience who were on hand for the Belt and Road World Boxing Champions Tour held Friday at Beijing?s Heyuan Royal Garden Hotel. Together with his manager and trainer Joven Jimenez, they were in the corner of former Olympian Mark Anthony Barriga, who fought and beat Thai Wittawas Bassapean for the vacant WBO International minimumweight title. There were Chinese boxers and fight who recognized Ancajas and had photos with him and posted it on social media. Jimenez believes that his prized fighter will have to train really hard in his two upcoming title defenses. On November 18, Ancajas (27W-1L-1D,18KO?s) will make the third defense of his title against Jamie Conlan at the SSE Arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland. If he hurdles Conlan, there is the looming all-Filipino clash with Jonas Sultan which could very well happen early 2018. Conlan is unbeaten at 19-0,11KO?s. In his eight year pro career he has captured a few belts like the WBO Intercontinental and WBC International titles. There are internet articles quoting Conlan that he can outbox Ancajas. Jimenez told this writer last Thursday here in the Chinese capital that has seen videos of Conlan and also Sultan?s upset win over former two-division world champion Johnirel Casimero. Jimenez thinks both contenders are skilled and could present Ancajas with problems inside the ring. ?Parehong lisud,? Jimenez said with a smile. (Both are difficult opponents.) Ancajas did not make any predictions and said that all he needs to do is to train hard, ?Ensayo lang ,Sir.? He stated. Both Ancajas and Jimenez paid attention to Sultan?s fight against Casimero last September 16 and they praised his performance in the upset victory. Sultan(14-3,9Ko?s) had previously beaten another former world champ Sonny Boy Jaro. The IBF world ratings on their website is still dated August 2017 as of this writing. Conlan is ranked number five. The Friday international fight card here saw six Filipino boxers sweeping their bouts, including four of four against Chinese counterparts. Aside from Barriga, WBO interim Oriental flyweight titlist Ronnie Baldonado retained his title by sixth round TKO against Iwan Zoda of Indonesia. The Filipino sweep was witnessed by boxing icon Manny Pacquiao who was at ringside. The event was co-promoted by MP Promotions and Wen Xin Zhou of Ding Xin Sports.
