IS NIETES HEAVY AT FLYWEIGHT?

PhilBoxing.com

Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes made the flyweight limit in third attempt at the scales during the weigh-in for Pinoy Pride 40. According to the report by PhilBoxing.com web editor and owner Dong Secuya: ?Nietes (39-1-4, 22KOs), first scaled at 112.4 lbs then tried again to register at 112.2 lbs before he took off his underwear to finally weighed 112 lbs.? Thai opponent Komgrich Nantapech (22-3-0, 15KOs) easily made the limit at 112 lbs in his first step on the weighing machine.

Nietes was quick to reason out that the excess weight was due to the underwear which he removed to make it to the limit. But fresh in the minds of the Filipino fight fans was the weighing incident of Marlon Tapales which caused the stripping of his world bantamweight title in a fight with Shohei Omori. We were a little bit worried that another world boxing battle may be lost in the scales. But thanks God, Donnie was able to make it.

The Nietes-Nantapech encounter will be for the IBF world flyweight championship whose title was vacated by another Pinoy boxer John Riel Casimero. Nietes is heavily favored to dominate Nantapech. We saw Prince Albert Pagara powerfully floored Nantapech, then known as Tawanrung Eausampan, in the second round with a right uppercut. He tried to get up but the referee stopped the carnage with the Thai on shaky legs before thousands of cheering fans at the Maasin City Gym. Nietes should not be complacent though for the Thai releases potent punches and fights as a true warrior.

IBF heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua will try to annex the vacant WBA heavyweight crown when he faces Wladimir Klitschko in what is considered as the richest bout in British boxing history. The historic fight will be held before 90,000 fans at the celebrated Wembley Stadium this coming April 29 Saturday (Sunday, Philippine time). ?April 29 is just another stepping stone towards greatness,? said Joshua. He has only fought 44 rounds and won the title in just 34 career rounds when he knocked out American Charles Martin in 2016.

Klitschko has fought 358 rounds in 68 fights with 64 wins. At age 41, he has a professional career spanning 20 years. Joshua?s trainer Rob McCracken said: ?As good as Klitschko has been, Father Time is a terrible person when he shows up and I think he already has.? Joshua?s promoter Eddie Hearn is confident of high pay-per-view sales. ?Only twice have they done it ? Lennox Lewis versus Mike Tyson and Floyd Mayweather versus Manny Pacquiao,? Hearn was quoted by BBC.

Gennady ?GGG? Golovkin was criticized for a so-so performance during his WBC/WBA/IBF/IBO middleweight championship against Daniel Jacobs (32-2, 29 KOs) at New York's Madison Square Garden. The scores were very close at 115-112, 115-112 and 114-113. Although Golovkin won by UD, Jacobs ended GGG?s 23 KO-streak. Coach Freddie Roach said GGG was ?exposed? and appeared ?beatable? in that fight and wants his boxer Miguel Cotto to face the Kazakh world champion at the end of the year.

Former world champion and Showtime analyst Paulie Malignaggi defended GGG in an interview with BoxingScene.com: "Triple G is the goods. Jacobs is also the goods. That's all that was about. They?re both good fighters. You?ve got to put on a hell of an effort to do that Danny Jacobs did. He didn?t expose anything in that fight. You better come good to get Triple G look like that. Danny proved that. He?s the one that has the goods more so than Triple G is in there lacking."
