FORMER WBO MINIMUM WEIGHT CHAMPION TANAKA STOPS PATILANO IN 6TH ROUND By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Mon, 30 May 2016 Former WBO minimumweight champion Kosei Tanaka has scored a 6th round TKO over the Philippines Rene Patilano in a ten round non-title bout at the International Conference Hall in Nagoya, Japan. Well known boxing man Joe Koizumi who once managed two division world champion Luisito Espinosa, reported that Tanaka was ?too fast and too ferocious? for Patalino who is ranked No. 10 by the IBF, demolishing him at 2:23 of the 6th round. But it was by no means an easy fight as Patalino displayed a courageous heart in retaliating with some solid combinations against the fast-moving and swift punching former world champion Tanaka who recently relinquished his 105 belt as he could no longer make the weight. Patalino was reportedly frustrated by the sharper jabs of Tanaka which forced the Filipino to back pedal. However, at the start of round five, Patalino went for broke but Tanaka responded quickly and in the fatal sixth round Tanaka swarmed all over the rapidly fading Filipino with a flurry of punches that sent him to the canvas on the seat of his trunks for the count. Tanaka commended Patalino for ?showing his experience and patience and proved to be a world contender? while Patalino said ?Tanaka was just faster than me. That?s all.? Tanaka who improved to 7-0 with 4 knockouts won the vacant WBO minimum weight title last May 30, 2015 with a twelve round unanimous decision over Mexico?s Julian Yedras who had a record 24-1 with 13 knockouts before successfully defending the title against Filipino Vic Saludar, with a stunning 6th round knockout. At the time of the knockout, Saludar was leading on the scorecards of all three judges ? Lynn Carter (50-44), Levi Martinez (49-45) and Zoltan Enyedi (50-44). With the loss Patalino, nicknamed ?Mr. Nice G uy? fell to 15-2-2 with 7 knockouts. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
