SALUD, NAZARIO WELCOME GOLDEN BOY-ARUM SETTLEMENT

PhilBoxing.com

WBC founding secretary general, the eminent lawyer Rudy Salud, yesterday welcomed reports of a settlement reached between former bitter rivals Golden Boy Promotions and Bob Arum of Top Rank.

Salud was joined in welcoming the news by Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao’s former business manager Rod Nazario who helped steer Pacquiao to two world titles before they parted ways amicably when Pacquiao signed up with Shelly Finkel.

Atty. Salud, no relation to Pacquiao’s close friend and confidant Rex "Wakee" Salud said it was "very good news, especially for Pacquiao and Filipino boxing fans." Salud said that now Pacquiao can fight the big name boxers under Oscar De La Hoya beginning with Marco Antonio Barrera followed by reigning WBC super featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez who won the title from Barrera earlier this year. Nazario, for his part said "this is good for boxing" even as the two rematches will prove Pacquiao’s right to the title of the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world today.

Pacquiao demolished Barrera in eleven rounds in November 2003 in San Antonio, Texas but had to settle for a draw against Marquez who, after being decked thrice in the first round fought back bravely over the next eleven to force what some considered a controversial draw with both camps claiming their fighter should have won.

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer told Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today early yesterday that "talks are ongoing and we hope to be able to communicate some good news later today" which would mean sometime today (Manila Time).

Although no details of the agreement which was reportedly hammered out by two panels of elite lawyers following lengthy mediation talks presided over by former judge Dan Weinstein were made known, speculations are that a Pacquiao-Barrera rematch with be held on October 6 in Las Vegas, probably at the Mandalay Bay Resort Hotel & Casino instead of the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Barrera himself had told Schaefer that he wanted a rematch with Pacquiao and if he couldn’t get it, he planned to retire.
