BATANG PINOY VISAYAS QUALIFYING LEG 2015 By Maloney L. Samaco PhilBoxing.com Fri, 28 Aug 2015 Romblon, Romblon - The National Youth Games of the Philippine Sports Commission also known as Batang Pinoy conducted its Visayas Qualifying Leg 2015 in this island municipality of Romblon also the capital town of the Province of Romblon. It started with the Opening Parade and Ceremony on August 23 at Romblon National High School Track and Field Oval. Elma Muros-Posadas, the Philippines' Athletics Queen, a favorite daughter of Romblon, ran around the track with the torch and lit the Games urn which signalled the opening of the competition. It was a homecoming for the PSC trainer who had so many offers abroad but decided to stay in the country to help our own athletes. Mayor Gerard Montojo of the host town Romblon warmly welcomed us and extended their cordial hospitality to the delegates. The amiable mayor was a football player during his student days and the favorite sports of Romblon are football and futsal. Maasin City sent about 60 athletes, and coaches/officials. We joined the competition in athletics, swimming, boxing, arnis, badminton, lawn tennis, chess, sepak takraw, and taekwondo. I was the only local chief executive who accompanied the visiting athletes to give them morale booster. Many were asking why it was Romblon who hosted the Visayas Leg when the province belongs to Mimaropa of Southern Tagalog Region. Mayor Montojo was quick to respond that Romblon was once part of Western Visayas and that they are Ilonggo-Bisaya-speaking. It was Posadas who recommended Romblon as the host for the Visayas elimination. Executive Order No. 44, otherwise known as the Philippine Youth Games-Batang Pinoy, serves as the national sports competition program for children aged 15 and below and envisioned to address the need for a grassroots sports program centered on values formation inherent in the practice of sports and fair play.
