World Billiards: Alcano, two more Pinoys advance By Eddie Alinea PhilBoxing.com Thu, 19 Feb 2015 GENERAL SANTOS CITY ? Three more Filipino stick wielders, including former 8-Ball and 9-Ball world kingpin Ronnie Alcano made it to the race for the money Thursday going into the final two days of the singles event of the World Pool Association 10-Ball Championship here. Alcano, nicknamed ?Volcano,? practically rose from the grave hacking out back-to-back victories in the losers? bracket and joined the fight for at least a $1,250 put up for players ending up from 17th to 32nd positions. Also making it to the round of 64 were local bets Patrick Gonzales and Johann Chua, who like Alcano, the 2006 9-Ball champ and the 2007 8-Ball titleholder, needed to win twice to stay alive following their separate losses in the 128-player group plays. Gonzales, 6-9 loser to compatriot Baset Mapandi in the group play, took the measure of Wonsik Ham of South Korea and another Filipino William Millares to advance. Chua, for his part, survived Imran Majid of Great Britain and Jerico Banares to join world no. 7 Dennis Orcullo, Lee Van Corteza, Raymundo Faraon Anton Raga and Jerico Bonus, who already had secured their place in the nest round a day before. No scores were available though as media men covering the event continued having nightmare as far as results gathering is concerned. A pall of gloom enveloped the SM General Santos activity Center playing area with the news that the grandmother of event sponsor, eight-division boxing champion Manny Pacquiao, died. Details of the death of the mother of Aleng Dionisia had yet to be made available. Top-seed Chang Yu Lung of Chinese Taipei led an array of foreign entries still in quest of the $40,000 top money of the $200,000 total purse put up by the World Boxing Organization welterweight belt owner. Others who made it were, among others, Piotr Kudik of Poland, Ruben Bautista of Mexico, Chang jun Lin of Taipei, Ralf Souquet of Germany, Radoslaw Babica of Poland, David Alcaide of Spain and Petri Makkonen of Finland.
