WORLD 10 BALL: FARAON, CORTEZA TALLY WINS

PhilBoxing.com

GENERAL SANTOS CITY ? Only two Filipino hopefuls survived the early surge of their foreign peers in Day I Tuesday of the Fourth World Pool Association 10-Ball Championship at the SM General Santos here.

Youthful world 17th ranked teener Raymund Faraon met head-on the challenge put up by Kamaal Chawla of India, 9-4, in a Group 2 action of the main draw to advance into the next phase of the tournament, two matches of making it to the final round of the 128-player field.

Lee Van Corteza, a wild card entry here, did not disappoint hundreds of pool enthusiasts expecting to see their idol, boxing champion Manny Pacquiao, beat Indonesia?s Muhammad Zulfikri in a decisive 9-2 decision in what somewhat made up for the failure of some 40 of their compatriots who made it to the main draw but failed to impress in their first test.

The World Boxing Organization welterweight kingpin was in Manila to attend to his job as Congressman, representing Sarangani Province.

Results came in trickles in a rather disorganized event sanctioned by the World Pool Association, but lacking the ingredients of a world level competition.

Early victims of the superior foreign invasion were Jordan Legaspi, the other half of doubles champion in the recent MP Cup International 10-Ball Championships held also here, who bowed to Waleed Majid of Qatar, 6-9; Demosthernes Pulpul, who lost to Fortunski Mieszko of Poland, 5-9; Boots Augusto, loser to Petri Makkonen of Finland; and Christian Gariando, a 8-9 loser to Shognosh Pandashung of Canada.

The opening round results also saw no. 1 seed Chung Yu Lung of Chinese Taipei routing David Alcaide of Spain; Liu Chien Chie, also of Chinese Taipei, prevailing over Ibrahim Amir of Malaysia, 9-2. Like Faraon, all other winners Tuesday moved into the next round, needing to win twice more to advance into the round of 16.

Some 40 more local boys were still playing at press time, including former world champions Francisco ?Django? Bustamante? Roniie ?Volcano? Alcano and Fil-Canadian Alex Pagulayan, who, however, is representing his country of choice.
