HOLLAND'S HUIDJI SEE DEFENDS WORLD BILLIARDS 10 BALL CROWN IN GENSAN

GENERAL SANTOS CITY ? Holland?s Huidji See opens defense of the crown he won the last time it was contested four years ago when the main draw of the World Pool Association 10-Ball Championships raises its curtain today at SM General Santos.

See and the rest of the more than a hundred pool titans from some 40 countries were scheduled to fly in here, in this booming city in South Cotabato in Mindanao late yesterday and early today from Manila in time for the 10a.m. quest of the $40,000 top prize of the total $300,000 put up by world boxing champion and billiards enthusiast Manny Pacquiao.

Also arriving as part of the seeded cue artists making up the 24-strong that occupy WPA top rankings are current no. 1 Chang Yu Lung of Chinese Taipei, former top-ranked Neils Feijin of The Netherlands, familiar Manila visitors Shane Van Boening of the United States, Li Hewen of China, Mikka Immonen of Finland, Darren Appleton and Germany?s Ralf Souquet,

Appleton and Immonen, besides earning their seedings as belonging to the top 24 rankings, are, winners of the 10-Ball titles in 2008 and 2010, respectively.

Souquet, although not in the elite list, earned his ticket as former world 9-Ball kingpin along with Filipinos Efren ?Bata? Reyes, Francisco ?Django? Bustamante, Fil-Canadian Alex Pagulayan, and Ronnie Alcano.

Reyes, known as ?The Magician? world-wide, begged off from taking up in the singles event as he and family are still mourning the death of a sister, according to tournament directress Ishi Caparras

Reyes, one of only two Filipino ?bilyaristas" to have won both the world 9-ball and 8-ball, will see action though in the MP Cup doubles event set after the singles tourney on Feb. 22-16.

Present WPA ranked no. 5 Dennis Orcullo is also outright main drawer like 10th ranked Carlo Biado, youth sensation and no. 21 Raymund Faraon no. 17 Warren Kiamco, and Jeffey Ignacio, who rounds out the top 24. They are all treated as wild card entries.

Also categorized as wild cards in the tournament proper are Lee Van Corteza, Ramil Gallego and Antonio Gabica

The host country?s participation added a boost after eight other Filipinos made it to the main draw following lasts Sunday?s first of a two-day qualifying series. They are Jerico Bonus, Oliver Medenilla, Emil Martinez, Jeffrey Calonge, Roland dela Cruz, Sean Mark Malayan, Richard Alinsub and Christian Gariando.

The remaining slots to complete the main draw list were still being decided late last night.
