‘I’ll be in Manny’s corner’—Roach By Dominic Menor PhilBoxing.com Tue, 10 Apr 2007 Manny Pacquiao’s trainer confirmed that exactly in a phone interview over a local radio program yesterday. Freddie Roach, talking from Puerto Rico where he is helping Oscar dela Hoya prepare for a blockbuster card in May, said he has spoken to dela Hoya and “the Golden Boy” has already given him the go-signal to fly to San Antonio where Pacquiao takes on an undefeated Mexican Saturday. Roach verified over the radio program “In the Zone” on dzSR that he will be at the Alamodome. “Yes I will be in Manny’s corner. I’ll definitely be there,” Roach said. Roach added that his people at the Wild Card Gym are aware of it. “They know that [I’m going]. I’ve talked to [conditioning coach Justin Fortune and Manny] about it,” Roach said. “Manny even asked me if I could go. I told Oscar that I’m going to go.” “Justin works for me, [so] there’s no complication between me and my partner,” he added. “We’re on the same page. We talk about Manny’s training everyday so everything’s fine.” Before he left for Puerto Rico, Roach actually left a steady training menu for Fortune and Pacquiao to work on, in particular video files of the fights of Jorge Solis, Pacquiao’s opponent this weekend. “He’s tall. He’s a brawler. He’s pretty good boxer but he’s hittable,” Roach began describing Solis. “He comes to you a little bit. He has 32 wins and 26 knockouts, but I don’t recognize any big names he’s met.” “[Solis] is a featherweight, coming up to 130,” he said, adding that Solis, a natural 126-pounder, will have a hard time against the heavier Pacquiao. “[Manny and I] have been in touch through the cell phone, and I’ve found sparring partners for him. We’ve found guys who very much like his opponent and they’ve given him a good workout everyday.” A few boxing aficionados who have seen a few of Solis’s fights surmise that Solis’s style (which is left-hand inclined) could be the perfect foil to the hard-hitting Pacquiao. Still, a motivated Pacquiao is a dangerous Pacquiao. Fully aware that the result of his ring performance in Texas will affect his bid for a congressional seat in May, Pacquiao, who arrived in San Antonio Sunday, will leave no stones unturned in a fight many think will not last five rounds. “Justin tells me and Manny tells me that [he’s] in great shape now and he’s ready to go,” Roach said. Pacquiao hasn’t fought in the US without Roach on his side, even though the two being around the ring together hasn’t always translated to victories. With Roach, Pacquiao has won nine times, drawn twice and lost once. For his outlook on the fight, Roach didn’t mince his words. “I don’t see this fight being much of a problem for Pacquiao,” he declared.
