Cavaliers Rally Past Brooklyn, 105-100; Extend Season Best Start to 11 Wins

PhilBoxing.com

The Cleveland Cavaliers appeared still floating on cloud nine after their blowout win over the Golden State Warriors yesterday and this nearly costed them their season best win streak thus far against the Brooklyn Nets earlier today.

Coach Kenny Atkinson had to experiment on a strange new lineup combination in the payoff period which worked especially on defense as the Cavaliers rally past a hard playing Brooklyn Nets, 105-100 and extend their season best start thus far to 11 wins.

Mainly through star scorer Donovan Mitchell the Cavs were able to hold off the Nets as the first half ended slightly in Cleveland's favor, 57-55.

But with Dennis Schroder orchestrating, Cam Johnson and Cam Thomas scoring and Nic Claxson getting the better of the battle at the slot against a lethargic Jarett Allen, the Nets came back from the first half deficit to wrest control of the lead at the end of the third quarter, 82-70.

Obviously, big man Jarett Allen and power forward Isaac Okoro were both on off night. Coach Atkinson had to improvise by putting Evan Mobley at five and Caris Le Vert at four supported by three guards and that seemed to shake the team out of the funk and awaken their sense of urgency.

The Nets were still sustaining a comfortable lead at halfway point of the final period when two unlikely heroes Ty Jerome and George Niang caught fire to pull the Cavs nearer.

As the Cav defense anchored on Mobley clamped down on the Nets, eventually Darius Garland took the lead for the Cavs, 101-100 which the Nets never regained until the final buzzer.

Jerome who was a revelation coming off the bench against the Warriors, hit the last two of his four points for the night to push the Cavs to a more comfortable lead, 103-100.

Fittingly, Mitchell iced the game with two free throws, 105-100.

Mobley led the Cavs with 23 points followed by Mitchell with 22 points and Garland 20 points. Le Vert added 12 points while Niang chipped in 8 points. Jerome scored 4 points, all in the crucial minutes of the final period. Jarrett and Okoro managed just 4 and 3 respectively.

Cam Johnson scored 23 points and Schroder and Cam Thomas had 22 apiece for Brooklyn.

The Cavs are two wins from matching the longest streak in Cleveland franchise history which was recorded thrice with Lebron James on the roster, the last in 2017.

The NBA record is held by the Stephen Curry-led Golden State Warriors at 24-0 set in 2016.

Erratum- Reader Felix Zarate corrected that Russell Westbrook is with the Denver Nuggets, and not with the Phoenix Suns as was inadvertently reported by this writer recently. My bad. I was also about to do a postscript item on the Denver- LAL game with the Phoenix-Miami game. Got the names and teams mixed up Senior moment or wishful thinking for the Suns which could surely welcome somebody like Westbrook to boost its campaign this season.
