NBA -- Loss to lowly Knicks could prove costly to Bulls

CHICAGO -- With a three-game winning streak tucked safely in their back pocket, the Chicago Bulls entered Wednesday night looking to sweep their four-game homestand when the New York Knicks visited the United Center.

But after a hard-fought 48 minutes of action, it was the Knicks who prevailed, 115-107, snapping a three-game slide.

The defeat was especially damaging for the Bulls, who fell to 9th place in the Eastern Conference with a 36-34 record, one game behind the 8th place Detroit Pistons (38-34).

"We couldn't sustain any defensive intensity," Bulls head coach Fred Hoiberg told the Chicago Tribune after watching the Knicks score well over 100 while making 45 of 87 from the field and 14 of 25 from 3-point range.

Kristaps Porzingis (29 points and 10 rebounds) and Carmelo Anthony (24 points) provided the lethal 1-2 punch that knocked out the Bulls in front of a home crowd of 21,778.

While the saying goes "it ain't over tip it's over," the Bulls task of making the playoffs is getting tougher. Out of their 12 remaining games in this 2015-16 season, eight will be on the road.

But there is hope, plenty of hope.

Derrick Rose, who soared with 21 in the Knicks debacle, is playing his best basketball since the All-Star break. Jimmy Butler and Pau Gasol are slowly coming back to good health while the bench is providing a lot of spark.

Yes, the outlook looks gloomy but there is a lot of basketball left to be played.
