The Revival of ‘Razor’ Ruddock

By Socrates Celestial
PhilBoxing.com
29 Mar 2015

Donovan ‘Razor’ Ruddock, 38 (29)-5(4)-1, was once the most feared Canadian Heavyweight, making his career debut in 1982. At the height of his career the tough ‘Razor’ tested his mettle against then Champion, ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson in back-to-back fights. Ruddock’s efforts resulted in a loss in both bouts against the Champ, however, Tyson has been vocal in admitting that Ruddock is one of the hardest hitting opponents he’s ever faced.

Exit 1991 and enter 2015 where the 51 year old pugilist is now coming out of retirement to prove he still has boxing in his blood. Albeit the now vegetarian and healthy looking fighter looks the roll of a hard grit boxer. His excellence will need to be proven against former Canadian champion Raymond (Bola) Olubowale, 10(7)-6(4)-1. The 6’7” Nigerian born boxer respects the celebrated Ruddock but insists that he will cut down the legendary ‘Razor’.

United Promotions, Toronto’s biggest boxing promotional company, will host these giants in their heavyweight bout on the March 28th card from the Hershey Center in Mississauga. Headlining the main event of this card will be undefeated featherweight Logan ‘Cotton’ McGuinness, 20(9)-0-1. Coming off injury, the champ will be facing Luis Armando Juarez, 19(4)-8(3)-2 from Argentina. McGuinness is one of the most exciting fighters to come out of the Canadian Boxing scene, headlining several events and fighting in Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland and the United States.

Top photo: Razor Ruddock (R) weighs in at 238.8 lbs vs Raymond Olubowale who came in at 265.6 lbs.

Co-Main Event Junmar "El Toro" Emon (L) stepped the scales at 152.2 Lbs while Kevin Higson came in 152.6 Lbs.

Main Event Logan Cotton McGuinness weighed in at 132.6 Lbs vs Luis Armando Juarez who stepped the scales at 131.6 Lbs.

McGuinness employed the undefeated Filipino pugilist Marc ‘Gwapo’ Pagcaliwangan, 8(6)-0-1 as his main sparring partner. The super-bantam weight fighter Pagcaliwangan brings speed and power to the McGuinness camp boasting a knockout ratio of over 66%. ‘Gwapo’ insists that “Logan is the strongest sparring partner I’ve ever had. His accuracy and workload are the reason why he remains undefeated. I’m preparing for a fight myself on April 14th and I couldn’t have had a better sparring partner to get ready.” Pagcaliwangan is one of only two Filipino/Canadian professional boxers active in Canada at present. The other Filipino fighter is Toronto native Junmar ‘El Toro’ Eamon, 6(2)-1.

‘El Toro’, will be coming off of an almost two year hiatus against undefeated fighter Kevin Higson, 5-0 on the same card. This crafty Filipino is known for being an explosive sturdy fighter under the coaching tutelage of Canadian boxing legend Richard Souce. Eamon’s only loss was a controversial decision against still undefeated champion Brandon Cook.

The stacked United card will also host fights with Ryan Young coming in with a perfect record of 6-0, the strong Steve ‘Silent’ Franjic working off a surprize loss with a 12-1 record, young undefeated fighter Josh O’Reilly 2-0, and Irish/Canadian Tim Cronin, 3-1. All opponents hail from Argentina, less Cronin’s opponent who is native of New Brunswick.
