Mga Aral Mula sa Thailand

MANILA — Kumusta po muli sa lahat ng nagbabasa ng kolum na ito at sana, nasa mabuti kayong kalagayan saan man kayo naroroon. Para sa mga kababayan kong nasa Thailand at ang marami kong mga fans diyan, “Sawasdee.”

Nitong nakaraang Lunes, pumunta kami sa Thailand para sa isang official business trip, kasama na rin ang pamamasyal sa bansang una kong kinagiliwan, dahil dito ako nagsimula halos ng aking pagsikat sa larangan ng boksing.

Nakasalamuha ko ang Prime Minister ng Thailand, si Abhisit Vejjajiva, at marami akong mga personal na experience sa lakad na ito.

Bukod sa opisyal na pakikitungo namin sa matataas na pinuno ng bansang ito, maraming ala-ala ang bumalik sa akin at maraming gunita at impormasyon ang aking nakalap, mga bagay na bago sa akin, bilang opisyal na kinatawan na rin ng Republika ng Pilipinas.

Suot ko ang puting Barong Tagalog, mainit akong tinanggap ng bansang ito kung saan ako nanalo ng aking unang pandaigdig na korona, ang WBC flyweight title noong December 4, 1998, ilang araw bago ako maging 19 years old. Ibang-iba na ang panahon ngayon at noon, ako ay isang musmos na mandirigma na wala pang alam at muwang sa mundo.

Noong mga panahong iyon, ang tanging nasa isip ko lamang ay kung paano lumaban at kung papaano umahong tuluyan sa kahirapan. Twenty-one years ago, I could not speak good English because I did not have the chance to go even to high school. All I knew then was to fight, fight and fight.

Dito rin sa Thailand ako nadapa, dito ko rin isinuko ang aking korona dahil talagang hindi ko na rin makayanang bumaba sa 112 pounds. Kahit na anong pagpipiga ng katawan ang aking gawin, hindi ko makayang abutin ang timbang at natalo ako ni Medgoen Singsurat. Mahirap tanggapin ang nasabing kabiguan, pero akin itong niyakap. Pero nagdesisyon kaming lumaban na lang sa 122-pounds division sa aking susunod na laban, mga tatlong buwan lang mula nang ako ay matalo.

Para sa akin, ang kasawian ay hindi nangangahulugan ng pagtigil ng pag-ikot ng mundo. Hindi dito nagtatapos ang isang bagay kundi isa lang itong yugto ng buhay. Mahirap man tanggapin kung minsan, kailangan muling sumulong ang bawat isa sa atin matapos mabigo sa ating hangarin.

Kahit na umakyat ako ng 4 na dibisyon mula sa 112 pounds, pinursigi kong magsanay at bumalik ulit sa mga sumunod na taon upang maging kampeon sa super-bantamweight division. Kung walang pagkatalo kay Singsurat, hindi ako magkakaroon ng mas malaking kagutuman upang lalong magsikap upang maging kampeon muli. Kung walang Erik Morales, hindi ko masasa-ayos ang ilan sa mga problemang hinarap ko paakyat sa pinakamataas na karangalan sa kabuuan ng boksing, ang pagiging best pound-for-pound boxer sa buong mundo sa kasalukuyan.

Sana ay magsilbing aral din ito sa lahat. Sana ay may matututunan kayo sa aking mga karanasan.
