DEMECILLO DECISIONS JIMENEZ TO CAPTURE THE WBO ASIA-PACIFIC YOUTH TITLE (PHOTOS)

CEBU CITY – Bantamweight prospect Carlo Demecillo used his reach advantage and consistent combinations to control the fight against Junrel Jimenez and emerged victorious after 10 rounds by majority decision and capture the WBO Asia-Pacific Youth Bantamweight Belt at the Robinson's Galleria Cebu Wednesday night promoted by Big Yellow Promotions. Judge Edward Ligas had it 97-93 for Demecillo; Edgar Olalo 99-91 for Demecillo; and Tony Pesons 95-95 draw. PhilBoxing had it 98-92 for Demecillo.

Demecillo (13-5-1, 6KOs) immediately went to work from the get go throwing bunches of punches at the southpaw Jimenez (8-2-1, 5KOs) who tried to time his counters. Demecillo connected with a good left to the head of Jimenez. Demecillo continued to connect with clean punches as Jimenez could not make any headway with his offense and seemed hesitant to let his fists fly. As the 3rd round draw to a close, Jimenez thought the 10-second warning was the end of the round and turned his back on Demecillo who capitalized on this and threw a combination that almost staggered Jimenez.

Referee Danrex Tapdasan raises the hand of Carlo Demecillo as Big Yellow Promotions CEO Set Oliver Tio (2nd from right) and WBO Vice-President Leon Panoncillo (R) look on.

In round four, Jimenez connected with a big right to the head but not enough to win the round. Demecillo continued to pile up points against Jimenez by taking the 5th round but Jimenez came alive in the second half of the fight, throwing caution to the wind, and fought toe to toe. The strategy worked a little bit but not enough to win many rounds as Demecillo still outboxed him up until the final bell. The big mall crowd however became highly alive as the fight got heated and full of action.

In the end, it was Demecillo, 23, from Big Yellow Boxing Gym, who went home with the WBO belt and the world ranking that goes with it.

Virgel Vitor finishes Jeffrey Estela in the second round.

In the main undercard scheduled for 8 rounds in the bantamweight division, Virgel Vitor of Bohol's Harada Boxing Stable made short work of Jeffrey Estela putting Estela to the canvas in the first round and finishing him in the second round with a barrage of body shots in the neutral corner. Vitor now improves to 14-2-0 with 8 knockouts while Estela dropped further to 4-8-3, 4KOs.

In 8 rounds minimumweight matchup, Clyde Azarcon of Big Yellow defeated Ernesto Alera in a tactical fight. Both Azarcon and Alera used their speed to try to outwit one another but Azarcon landed the cleaner shots and won by majority decision with scores of 78-74 from each of the three judges Noel Flores, Atty William Manos and Edwin Barrientos.

Rhonvex Capuloy punishes Toushin Battulga.

In the most brutal and entertaining fight of the evening scheduled for 8 rounds in the featherweight, Rhonvex Capuloy of Big Yellow stopped Japanese Toushin Battulga of the Rex Flores Gym in the second round after Capuloy himself was in dire strait. Capuloy and Battulga immediately went at it in the first round with the Japanese tried to walk over Capuloy but Capuloy's ring smarts won him the round. Capuloy boxed well in the second round until he was trapped by Battulga in the ropes and after a barrage of exchanges, Capuloy was cut with a punch near his right eye causing blood to drip in his face and onto the canvas. Battulga, seeing red, went in for the kill and threw everything at Capuloy who somehow connected with a crack counter that sent Battulga to the seat of his pants. After Battulga beat the count, it was Capuloy's turn to pursue Battulga who was cornered in his own corner and unable to fend Capuloy's barrage of punches to the body as veteran referee Teddy Alivio came in to stop the punishment. Capuloy now improves to 6-1-0, 5KOs while Battulga tasted his first defeat in three professional fights.

Naason corners Pondales.

In the curtain raiser, Elmer Naason of Big Yellow stopped Matthew Pondales in the 4th round of the four-round scheduled super lightweight bout. Naason now improves to 2-0-0, 2KOs.
