NBA -- Butler's buzzer-beating 3 lifts Bulls over Hawks By Kevin Gonzalez PhilBoxing.com Sat, 18 Oct 2014 ![]() CHICAGO -- Jimmy Butler hit a game-winning 3 as time expired to lift the Chicago Bulls to a thrilling, 85-84, victory over the Atlanta Hawks Thursday night at the United Center. Butler scored 20 of his game-high 29 in the fourth quarter where the Bulls went on a 38-18 run that dismantled what was once a 21-point deficit. Chicago also came from 21 points down to topple the Denver Nuggets, 110--90, last Monday. The Bulls had a hard time finding the bottom of the net and shot just 29 of 78 from the field, including 5-for-25 above the 3-point arc. But after trailing 70-50 with only 10:44 left, Tony Snell nailed a 3 that jump started the comeback. Pau Gasol helped in the scoring chores with 11 and 7 rebounds. Derrick Rose finished with 10 points while Joakim Noah had a game-high 13 rebounds. Nikola Mirotic, Taj Gibson and Tony Snell combined for 22 off the bench. Mike Scott registered 15 points for the Hawks, who led for the most part before unraveling in the fourth quarter. Dennis Schroder and John Jenkins added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Jeff Teague and Paul Millsap did not suit up for Atlanta, which missed 49 of 80 shots, including 20 three-point attempts. Hawks rookie Jarell Eddie made the costly mistake of fouling Butler from the 3-point line with 14.1 ticks to go and Atlanta ahead, 82-79. Butler calmly sank all three free throws to even the count. Schroder made a driving lay-up in the ensuing play, putting Atlanta back on top, 84-82. But there was just enough time left in the game clock --- 1.3 seconds -- for Butler to make his dramatic catch-and-shoot 3. Asked why he put starters Gasol, Butler, and Noah back in the middle of the fourth quarter, and not franchise-star Derrick Rose, Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau said: ?He?s still not comfortable yet, but he?s getting there. I just want him to be ready when he does go in there. He?s close though, he?s close.? The former coach of the year also admitted having doubts about bringing his starters out in the fourth while also praising Butler?s stellar play: ?I wasn?t even sure i was going to put the other guys in, because of the way the game was and, also, the team that was out there got us going and Jo? (Noah), really needs the minutes. Jo? got going as the game went on and Pau wanted to get some work in. Jimmy has grown. He?s gotten better and better. He?s in great shape right now and he?s playing terrific.? The Bulls improved to 3-2 in the pre-season while the Hawks fell to 2-2.
