MAYWEATHER'S 47-0 NEARS MARCIANO'S 49-0

PhilBoxing.com

Floyd Mayweather won convincingly during his rematch with Argentine Marcos Maidana. It was a unanimous decision, 115-112 on Dave Moretti?s scorecard, and 116-111 as seen by Guido Cavallerie and John McKaie.

According to punch statistics, Mayweather landed 166 punches compared to Maidana's 122. He threw fewer punches, 326 to Maidana's 572. Mayweather however connected with 58 % power punches (108 of 177) while Maidana had only 26 % (87 of 335).

Mayweather's professional record now stands at 47-0 with 26 KO's. He surpassed Joe Calzaghe's undefeated record of 46-0 and is nearing Rocky Marciano's 49-0.

Calzaghe, a Welsh boxer; is a former WBO, IBF, WBC, WBA & The Ring supermiddleweight champion and The
Ring lightheavyweight champion. He is the longest-reigning supermiddleweight world champion in history, holding the WBO supermiddleweight title for over ten years and made 21 successful defenses. He moved up as light heavyweight champion and retired with the longest continued reign as world champion.

On April 27, 1956, world heavyweight champ Rocky Marciano retires from boxing at age 31, for the reason he wanted to spend more time with his family. Marciano ended his career as the only undefeated heavyweight champion with a perfect record of 49 wins in 49 professional bouts, with 43 knockouts.

Marciano fought his first professional match on March 17, 1947, defeating Lee Epperson in a third-round knockout and went on to win his next 15 matches by knockout.

On October 26, 1951, Marciano defeated former heavyweight champ Joe Louis and knocking him out in the eighth round. Marciano captured the heavyweight crown in Philadelphia on September 23, 1952, by a knockout against defending champion Jersey Joe Walcott in the 13th round. Marciano faced Walcott again in a rematch in Chicago on May 15, 1953, and stopped him in the first round.

Marciano, nicknamed the ?Brockton Blockbuster,? successfully defended his title five more times, with his last professional bout, against Archie Moore in New York on September 21, 1955, ending in a ninth-round KO.

He died in a small-plane crash in Iowa on August 31, 1969.

Will Mayweather break Marciano's perfect record and retire undefeated? He is now open to fighting Manny Pacquiao in what will be the richest boxing bout in history. If the megabuck title fight pushes through, Money has to hurdle Manny to surpass Rocky's record to retire with the best professional slate and with the highest pay in boxing history.
