MP CUP GENSAN TUNA FESTIVAL INT?L OPEN BILLIARDS: Hohmann-Mora Pair Keep Winning Streak, Locals in Hot Pursuit PhilBoxing.com Thu, 11 Sep 2014 ![]() Hohmann. GENERAL SANTOS CITY?Top favorites Thorsten Hohmann and John Mora continued to advance into the quarterfinals of the prestigious MP Cup GenSan Tuna Festival International Open 10-Ball Billiards team tournament even as Manny Pacquiao and Ronnie Alcano likewise emerged victorious here at the SM Mall. Hohmann, the German champion who earlier this week won the huge singles event, and Mora, the Canadian partner, blasted the Canadian pair of Alex Pagulayan and Gandy Valle, to remain in the hunt for the $40,000 top prize in this $100,000 tournament bankrolled by Saranggani Congressman Emmanuel "Manny" Pacquiao in celebration of the 16th General Santos Tuna Festival. Local phenoms Chezka Centeno and Jeffrey Roda, both 14-year-olds, created a minor stir, upending the Dennis Orcullo-Carlo Biado team, 9-7, in this race-to-nine games format which attracted some of the top players from the US, Chinese-Taipei, United Arab Emirates, Canada, South Korea and Germany. Centeno, the sharp and sweet-shooting lass from Zamboanga and Roda, the calm and collected boy from nearby Surigao, were challenging the solid pair of Hohmann-Mora in the resumption of play as of press time later in the evening. Pacquiao, an avid billiards player and patron playing in one of his "other" favorite sport including boxing and basketball, was in deadly form, partnering with the lanky but deadly Alcano, a long-time friend. They raced to a 4-0 lead and never looked back, finishing off the highly-favored Lee Van Corteza-Judel Mazon pair, 9-5. Also advancing were the indefatiguable tandem of legends Efren ?Bata? Reyes and Francisco ?Django? Bustamante, who beat Jimmy Shaik and Christopher Alalunay. They were playing the upset-conscious pair of Dondon Razalan and Warren Menguito, who earlier beat the Rodolfo Luat-Christian Gariando pair. Max Eberle of the US and local Darwin Bernadaz likewise advanced alongside the mighty Chinese Taipei teams of Ko Pin Yi and Ko Pin Chung, Hsu Kai Lun and Chang Yu Long, Fu Che Wei and Chang Yu, and Koreans Ga Young Kim and Ho Jun Kwon. Other Philippine-based pairs which advanced include Warren Kiamco-Roberto Gomez and Lauro Bongay-Napoleon Labrador. ![]() |
