Maine boxer Brandon Berry making Fight To Educate history - Sept. 18 in Manchester, NH

PhilBoxing.com

MANCHESTER, N.H. (September 4, 2014) - Unbeaten junior welterweight prospect Brandon "The Cannon" Berry (6-0, 4 KOs) has the distinction of being the only boxer to participate in the Fight To Educate (FTE) Pro-Am boxing event, sanctioned by the New Hampshire Boxing Commission, as both an amateur and professional boxer.

Berry will take on Fred Mandrachia (0-2), of Plymouth, Massachusetts, in a four-round fight in the 13th edition of the Fight To Educate, to be held Thursday night, September 18 at Verizon Wireless Center in Manchester, New Hampshire.

Fight To Educate, presented in part this year by Matrix Aerospace, is a unique charity event that combines a love of boxing with the vision of assisting children and seniors in need who without fundraisers like this could be 'down for the count.' During the past 12 years, Fight To Educate has raised more than $750,000 in donations benefiting local New Hampshire non-profit organizations.

This year's attending Boxing Legends include former world middleweight champion Vito Antueofermo (50-7-2, 21 KOs), world heavyweight title challengers Chuck "Bayonne Bleeder" Wepner (25-14-2, 17 KOs) and Earnie "The Acorn" Shavers (74-14-1, 68 KOs), and two-time World Boxing Association heavyweight champion John "The Quietman" Ruiz (44-9-1, 30 KOs).

The 26-year-old Berry, who lives in Forks, Maine, will be fighting on the FTE card for the third straight year, the first as an amateur and last year as a professional. The popular brawler got a relatively late start in boxing, strapping on gloves for the first time in a match eight years ago at the age of 18. He ended his amateur career with a deceiving 18-19 record.

"I didn't realize how serious boxing is and a lot of my losses were at the beginning of my amateur career," the well-spoken Berry explained. "I also fought some of the best amateurs in New England, Tommy Doucette and Tim Ramos, to name two of the better known boxers. This is why I'm not shy about discussing my losing record. My style was always better suited for the professional ranks.

"I'm so thankful that the Fight To Educate people think enough of me to bring me back. As an amateur I took advantage of the opportunity to fight in the Fight To Educate as an amateur, especially fighting in a building like the Verizon Center, and then again last year as a pro. I hope to make this an annual fight for me. It's so special because of the magnitude of the building and the proceeds going to great causes. I sell quite a few tickets and I'm proud and very happy to part of it, especially where it's held in New England. I'm a proud New Englander."

The FTE has showcased two boxers who have gone on to capture World Boxing Organization (WBO) titles: undefeated middleweight Peter "Kid Chocolate" Quillin and unbeaten junior middleweight Demetrius "Boo Boo" Andrade.

"I'd be lying if I said I hadn't noticed that Quillin and Andrade fought on past Fight To Educate shows," Berry added. "I'm not saying I'm in the same company, or as skilled as they are but, they've fought in the Fight To Educate, and so have I. They were where I am and maybe someday a young fighter will say they're fighting on the same card I did.

"If I hadn't fought last year in the Fight To Educate, I wouldn't have had the opportunity to meet Danny O'Connor. He's a great guy and we're in contact at least once a month. I'm also proud to be fighting on the same card this year with Chris Gilbert and Russell Lamour. I look up to them."

Vermont Junior middleweight Chris Giilbert (11-1, 9 KOs) will be fighting in the Fight To Educate for the fourth time. This year, however, he will headline against an opponent to be determined in the eight-round bout.

Portland, Maine's undefeated middleweight Russell Lamour (9-0, 4 KOs) will face TBA in the six-round co-feature. Also scheduled to fight on the pro segment of the FTE card is unbeaten Whitman, Mass. middleweight Mark "The Italian Bazooka" DeLuca (10-0, 7 KOs) vs. Zain Shah (5-3, 3 KOs), of Centreville, Virginia.

Two amateur matches featuring local boxers will open the live action. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Proceeds from the 13h annual Fight To Educate will benefit SEE Science Center (www.see-sciencecenter.org), The Bobby Stephens Fund for Education (www.stepheneducationfund.com), and New Horizons for New Hampshire.

Tickets, priced at $50.00 and $25.00 (general admission), $10 tickets for Veterans and Senior Citizens 60+, are available to purchase at the Verizon Wireless Arena Box office, by going online at
