NBA -- Bulls hope veteran Aaron Brooks can make a difference

CHICAGO -- With the return of franchise star Derrick Rose, plus the signings two-time NBA champion Pau Gasol and European sensation Nikola Mirotic, the Chicago Bulls enter the approaching 2014-15 season with high championship expectations.
It remains, however, doubtful as to whether Rose can stay healthy and return to MVP form. So as a back-up plan, the Bulls acquired veteran Aaron Brooks during the offseason to serve as back-up at point guard and lessen Rose's burden.
Listed at 6-feet and 161 pounds, the 29-year old Brooks is in the mold of the Bulls' two previous substitute point guards who tend to "score-first" --- 5-foot-9 Nate Robinson and the 6-foot D.J. Augustine.
Robinson and Augustine flourished under Tom Thibodeau?s system. Their signings in 2012 and the 2013 were not met positively at first but both acquitted themselves well and endeared themselves to Bulls fans by helping Chicago march to the playoffs.
Nate Robinson and D.J. Augustine saw their careers revitalized in Chicago, with Augustine averaging a career high 14.9 point per game while Robinson norming career playoffs high in almost every statistical category. The Bulls are hoping Brooks can bring the same ferocity and competitiveness that Robinson and Augustine brought.
If history is a barometer, Brooks will also likely thrive under the tutelage of Derrick Rose and the guidance of coach Thibodeau.
Brooks is coming off a moderately successful season as a Denver Nugget, averaging 11.9 points, 5.2 dimes and 2.7 rebounds a game. But he can be a better player as proven in 2009-10 season when he normed 19.6 points an outing.
If he plays to his potential, Brooks can be a valuable piece in the Bulls' much hoped for championship run. (KG)
