VILORIA STAKES CLAIM FOR ANOTHER TITLE SHOT AFTER KO WIN OVER ZUNIGA

PhilBoxing.com

Former WBO/WBA flyweight champion Brian Viloria made a strong claim for another title shot after a dominating 5th round knockout victory over Mexico?s Jose Alfredo Zuniga at the plush Cotai Arena of the Venetian Resort Hotel and Casino in Macau earlier this evening.

Prior to the Zuniga showdown which we predicted Viloria should win because of his solid record and his experience, he told the Manila Standard/Viva Sports he is aching for a rematch with Juan Francisco Estrada who won the title from Viloria by a split decision in April last year.

In that fight Viloria out-boxed Estrada up to the middle rounds but made the mistake of trying to engage the tough Mexican in a slugfest and paid the price.

Viloria started off impressively against Zuniga using his jab and some solid combinations to rattle the Mexican whom he caught with a hard left in the third round sending Zuniga stumbling across the ring.

The former two division world champion nailed Zuniga with three vicious rights in succession in round No. 4 and looked impressive as he carried the scheduled ten round bout to the Mexican.

Viloria cracked Zuniga with a terrific left hook to the body and it was all over at 1:42 of the fifth round.

The 33 year old Viloria was dead set in putting on an impressive performance against Zuniga hoping it would lead to a rematch for the WBO/WBA belts he lost to Mexico?s Juan Francisco Estrada also at the Cotai Arena in Macau in April last year.

Viloria was inspired by the fact that he and wife Erika have a son and said it had really given him ?extra motivation to keep going in my boxing career.?

Freddie Roach?s talented Filipino assistant Marvin Somodio who trained Viloria and worked his corner was confident prior to the fight when he told the Manila Standard/Viva Sports Viloria was training hard and his ?preparation for the fight has been very good and he is in great condition and ready.?

In his first comeback fight after losing his titles Viloria showed a little ring rust but won a comfortable ten round decision over Juan Herrera but in his second comeback fight Brian looked very impressive.

The win improved Viloria?s record to 34-4 with 20 knockouts while Zuniga who is eight years younger than Viloria dropped to 11-6-1 with 5 knockouts.

Well known Australian promoter Peter Maniatis on the eve of the fight reported that Zuniga looked fit and tough and didn?t seem fazed by Viloria?s record and reputation of having beaten such big names as Giovanni Segura, Omar Nino Romero and Hernan ?Tyson? Marquez all by stoppage.

Zuniga was coming off a loss on points in a WBA light flyweight Interim title fight against Alberto Rossel.
