Almaty, Kazkhstan - Competition was fierce and exciting at the 4th Kazakhstan President's Cup currently being held at the Baluan Sholak Palace of Culture and Sports here.
Charly Suarez, in his first international stint after fighting for the Milano Thunder in the World Series of Boxing until February last year, scored his second victory in as many days at the expense of Jumsakbaev of Kazakhstan, with a performance that earned applause even from the hometown crowd.
"I'm slowly getting into the groove after all those injuries that sidelined me last year. One and a half years away from the ring is too long. But I still need to get to 100%. I'm working on it", said the two-time SEA Games gold medalist in Pilipino,
Dennis Galvan on the other hand, ran into a solid Mongolian who was obviously more experienced. All three judges gave the nod to Chinzorig.
Thursday, 2010 Asian Games gold medalist and first day winner Rey Saludar goes up against lanky Cuban Jorge Vivas, the American Continental champion. Vivas scored a knockdown on the first day against vaunted Thai Chatchai Butdee enroute to a unanimous decision win.
In the light flyweight class, Rogen Ladon fights Erjan of Kazakhstan. Ladon drew a bye and landed a free trip to the quarterfinals.
National coaches Nolito Velasco and Elmer Pamisa man the corner while Abap executive director Ed Picson is team manager.
The week-long tournament, which drew 104 male boxers from 12 countries, ends Sunday.
