DUTERTE LEADS THOUSANDS OF DAVAOENOS TO 'BOXING REVOLUTION' AT ALMENDRAS GYM PhilBoxing.com Wed, 25 Jun 2014 ![]() Duterte. Davao City - Colorful and popular Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte whose love for boxing is legendary will lead thousands of Davaoenos and those from the neighboring areas in filling up the 3,500-seat capacity Almendras Gymnasium to witness the first staging of The Boxing Revolution series on Saturday,June 28. Duterte, in a meeting last night with Sonshine Sports Management chief executive officer former Gov. Manny Pinol, confirmed that he will be at ringside to witness the bout between former WBC World Flyweight champion Sonny Boy Jaro and Indonesian Ichal Tobida for the Asian Boxing Federation (ABF) Superflyweight title and other bouts featuring upcoming boxers from the Southern Philippines. Saturday's event, dubbed as The Boxing Revolution I, will be the first boxing card staged by Sonshine Sports Management, a brainchild of popular evangelist Pastor Apollo Quiboloy, who is a friend of the Davao City mayor. The Almendras boxing event is also a reunion of sorts for Duterte, Pinol and Quiboloy who on Oct. 26, 2002 staged the Manny Pacquiao-Frakaporb Rakiatgym IBF Superbantamweight championship also in Davao City which ended in a first round knockout. The Boxing Revolution program which will be staged on a regular basis is expected to discover new boxing talents who will be supported by the Sonshine Sports Management. On Saturday, veteran and upcoming fighters will be featured, including former WBO Oriental featherweight champion Lorenzo "Thunderbolt" Villanueva who has moved up to the junior lightweight division and will be fighting another Indonesian, Hendrik Barongsay, in a 10-round non-title bout. Also featured is the Philippine junior welterweight championship between Davao del Norte's Adonis Cabalquinto who will be defending his title against Laguna's Giovanni Rota. In the undercards, new boxing faces will be featured including the 5' 10"-tall lightweight Roskie Cristobal of Pres. Roxas, North Cotabato who at 20 years old holds a record of 7 wins, all by knockout. Former amateur standout Jade Bornea of Arakan, North Cotabato whose twin brother Jake is already campaigning in the professional league, will make his pro debut while the sensational Gilbert Gomera of Gen. Santos City, who stopped veteran Joven Catubay of Cebu City last month, will be making his first appearance in the 8-round level carrying an immaculate record of 7 wins with 5 KOs. Also expected to be present during the Saturday night card is IBO World Superflyweight champion Edrin "The Sting" Dapudong who is preparing for his first title defense in East London, South Africa on July 18. Prominent political personalities from North Cotabato led by Kidapawan City Mayor Joseph Evangelista, M'lang Mayor Joselito Pinol and Magpet Vice Mayor Efren Pinol are also expected to witness the event. The 12-fight card, sanctioned by the Games and Amusements Board (GAB), will be for the benefit of the Children's Joy Foundation and the Cor Jesu Law School. Fights start at 6 p.m. ![]() |
