ARUM IS RIGHT -- AND WRONG! By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Fri, 23 Mar 2007 Top Rank Promotions Bob Arum is right when he says that Manny Pacquiao who he claims will earn close to $5 million for his April 14 fight against undefeated but unknown Mexican Jorge Solis will earn more than the combined earnings of Marco Antonio Barrera and Juan Manuel Marquez in their “Fearless” title clash last Sunday in Las Vegas. However, Arum is wrong when he says one fighter got paid $1.5 million and the other $1.25 million in the March 18 fight unless it included pay-per-view revenues which however, cannot be calculated at this time since the figures wont be available for several weeks. The Nevada State Athlertic Commission informed Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today that under the contracts filed with the Commission, Barrera received a purse of $1,2 million and Marquez a purse of $700,000 for a total of only $1.9 million which was way off the figures quoted by Arum. However, efforts to find out the true purse of Pacquiao from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation which is under the Texas Commission handling Combative Sports were unsuccessful. Public Information Officer Patrick Shaughnessy said “while the contracts contestants sign prior to title fights in Texas are required to be filed with the TDLR, I am unable to provide you with copies of those contracts nor release any of the provisions of the contracts.” Shaughessy disclosed that a very similar request had been turned down before as the office of the Attorney General of Texas issued an opinion which stated that “the submitted contracts are protected by the right of common law privacy and must be withheld.” However, Shaughessy agreed to forward our request to the Office of the Attorney General in Texas to “ask for an opinion on the releasability of the contract and the contract provisions” for the Pacquiao-Solis fight. Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today informed the Texas Commission that in the past, information on the purses of boxers had been released by the Nevada State Athletic Commission as well as the Commissions in California and New York and the request was made in the interest of transparency and the public’s right to know.
