Southern California Filipino Dental Society Opens Free Dental Clinic in Tacloban for Yolanda Victims PhilBoxing.com Mon, 19 May 2014 ![]() The SCFDS with Philboxing writer/photographer Dr Ed de la Vega providing the design and technical expertise in the construction, donated a complete dental clinic to the Divine Word Hospital in Tacloban City meant to provide free dental services to the people of Tacloban particularly the victims of Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda). The clinic features some of the latest dental equipment available in the market including a digital X-ray system, an intra-oral camera with an accompanying 32-inch monitor, high- speed computers and a steam powered autoclave capable of sterilizing instruments in 20 minute cycles. An air compressor with an in- line filter to drive the dental unit and high volume evaluator to aid in surgical procedures are also part of the equipment installed. Two interesting features incorporated with the clinic systems are a central water filter to reduce contaminants that may be present from the city water source that supplies the water for the dental clinic and an ultra-violet germicidal light inside the sterile surgical instrument cabinet meant to maintain a germ free environment. The official turn over ceremonies from the SCFDS to the DWH was done last Saturday, May 17, 2014 with SCFDS President Dr. Randy Lozada presenting the key for the dental clinic to Sister Lydia Villegas, OSB the Sub-Prioress of the Benedictine Sisters that runs the Hospital. The SCFDS funded the construction of the clinic and all the dental equipment, start- up supplies, and furnishings to make the clinic fully operable. The DWH will manage the clinic and shoulder the cost of power, water, phone and internet services. They will also be responsible for picking the dentists who will run the clinic. To make the clinic self supporting, three days a week, the clinic will see patients on a sliding scale fee basis. However, the rest of the week it will be open to the poorest of the poor who will get free dental services.
