PhilBoxing.com

Mississauga, Canada ? From the Hershey Center once more, United Promotions hosted another night of Pugilism. The electric was already in the room from the contest earlier in the day from the elite amateur event that decided the fate of this pugilist vying for a national spot. These Olympic hopefuls and their respective teams engaged the boxing fans into a preparation for the Professional venue. In a very busy venue fans showed excitement before the matches began. Professional Boxers George Chuvalo, Logan Cotton McGuiness and Donovan Boucher were in attendance.

Andre Gorges (11-3, 6ko) Windsor, ON versus Tamaz Avdiev (8-3) France

The opening fight had an aggressive boxer hailing from France against a slick Canadian from Windsor Ontario. Both fighters looking evenly matched in the opening rounds until Avdiev exposes Gorges weak defense in the third round dropping the Canadian halfway through the round. Then in a sudden turn around ?Gorgeous? Gorges drops the French pugilist with a smashing single left hook in the fifth round. Avdiev lay flat on his back and was unable to meet the count. Official decision: Gorges by way of knockout, 3:00 minutes into the fifth round.

Tim Cronin (0-1) Etobicoke, ON vs. Jay Alexander (Pro debut) Orangeville, ON

This battle between Light-Heavyweights had Cronin coming in with a polished amateur record and Alexander coming in with 4 professional Mixed Martial Arts fights (MMA). Their experiences brought in a back and forth war with nonstop action. Alexander possessed the power, but Cronin had the ring savvy and landed the cleaner shots. Official decision: (40-36, 40-36, 39-37) Unanimous for Cronin.

Ryan Young (4-0, 4 KO) Oakville, ON versus Arnoldo Poblete (7-5-1) Lautaro, Chile

Young the confident and taller fighter controlled much of this fight against a power puncher that offered only a looping right hook and a jab. Young look composed and in control for the entire affair. In the fourth round Young?s constant pressure bloodied the Chilean journeyman forcing referee Mark Simmons to stop the contest before the fifth stanza could begin. Official decision: Young by way of Technical Knockout (TKO) at the end of four rounds.

Brandon Cook lands a vicious power punch on Phil Rose.

Steven Wilcox and his team celebrates their victory over Mexican Saul Mendoza.

Victorious Team Gwapo poses for the media at ringside.

Steven Wilcox (8-1, 4 KO) Hamilton, ON versus Saul Mendoza (10-7-1, 2 KO) Mexico City, Mexico

On the heels of a loss, Wilcox comes into the contest pushing for his comeback. The elusive foot work and snapping counter punches showed that Wilcox has not skipped a beat. Wilcox kept Mendoza at the end of his punches as the Mexican swung wildly rarely hitting his mark. Wilcox cruises into a good win staying consistent with his punches, defense and counter punches. It was the counter left hook of Wilcox that did the most damage, timing after the wide right hook. Official decision: Majority decision wins for Steve Wilcox. (57-57, 60-54, 59-55)

Marc Pagcaliwangan (6-0-1, 6 KO) London, ON versus George Cachechiladze (14-7-1,6KO) Georgia

This Co-Main event had the sensational Marc ?Gwapo? Pagcaliwangan coming off a dramatic draw and reinserting himself against the stocky Russian Cachechiladze. The earlier rounds were easily controlled by the quick Filipino. Gwapo had more variety of combinations and landed more efficiently. The Russian walked forward with short aggressive punches but lacked the accuracy to make them add anything substantial towards his campaign. The early rounds belonged to the crafty Canadian/Filipino, but the fifth round the sturdy Russian connected with power hooks leaving Gwapo to clinch more than box.

Pagcaliwangan had the fans rally behind him as he landed quick hooks and uppercuts only to be met by Cachechiladze?s harsh hooks. Pagcaliwangan took the fight to his opponent by staying inside his offensive pocket rather than work from the outside utilizing his long punches. Official decision: 59-55, 59-55, 59-56 for a majority decision for Marc Pagcaliwangan. The Canadian remains undefeated.

Brandon ?Bad Boy? Cook (12-0, 7 KO) versus Phil ?The Assassin? Rose (5-2-1, 4 KO)

The main event started strong from the bell. Challenger Rose was constantly jeered with boo?s from the fans, but it didn?t seem to faze the tough Whitby native. The bout was a battle from beginning to end. Towards the fifth round the momentum shifted from Cook and for Rose. The sixth round Rose stepped up the offense and landed several damaging blows. So much so that a 10-8 round could have been awarded. Cook?s footwork and head slips made him appear to be the seasoned boxer; however the abrasive power of Rose quickly changed the advantage. Rose seemed to have earned the fans respect as the chants changed from Bad Boy to Assassin. The judge?s scorecard resulted in a Split: 77-74 Rose, 77-74 Cook and 77-75 Cook. Brandon Cook wins the NABA middle weight championship.
