Monico urges DepEd to review its sports program By Jerome S. Galunan Jr. PhilBoxing.com Mon, 31 Mar 2014 ![]() BACOLOD CITY -- Mayor Monico Puentevella has urged the Department of Education (DepEd) to review its current program in order for the sports to succeed and for the agency to help in the talent identification of athletes ? who might give the country its first Olympic gold medal. Puentevella, a former chairman of the Philippine Olympic Committee and have served as commissioner of the Philippine Sports Commission, cited that the DepEd?s present sports program is ?defective.? ?Why, I said so? Unlike other countries in the world, most of them start training their student-athletes at the younger age, and provide them, not only ample of time for skills development but, also advanced training programs,? the local chief executive said. ?Further, we also lack qualified coaches to train our student-athletes with the expected performance. I?m not against our teachers ? who also served as teacher-coaches during various athletic competitions because, some of them are also competent. However, I have observed that many of them were just assigned to lead the team because it?s a DepEd-bankrolled competition and that?s the requirement,? Puentevella stressed. ?If I get a chance to talk to DepEd Sec. Bro. Armin Luistro, I will tell him of the need a POC-PSC-DepEd-Department of Interior and Local Government Summit. This is to enable us deal all these problems and have a solution. Because, if indeed, that our teachers should be the one to handle the coaching tasks, then we have to help them in order to upgrade their capabilities with the required standard. We must provide them the necessary trainings for them to cope with the present requirements,? Puentevella said. Moreover, the former 3-term lawmaker also cited the death issue in boxing that occurred in last year?s Central Luzon Regional Athletic Association.?I don?t understand why should DepEd stop this sports event in the Palarong Pambansa? What?s the problem with ?boxing?? There?s none,? Puentevella said. ?The problem is how the competition is being run. We must assign officiating officials who are technically well-versed and trained to handle respective sports. Much more that there are lots of contact sports being played in Palaro and other related competitions,? he added. It was recalled that early this year, DepEd cameout with a memorandum removing boxing at least in the elementary division of the 2014 Palarong Pambansa, which is scheduled May 4 to 10. "Boxing in the elementary division shall be excluded," Sec. Luistro said in the said order.(WATCHMEN DAILY JOURNAL) Photo: Bacolod City Mayor Monico Puentevella and POC President Jose ?Peping?
