DULJOMAN INTERVIEW WITH FREDDIE ROACH By Anthony 'Duljoman' Andales PhilBoxing.com Fri, 23 Feb 2007 I called Freddie Roach two weeks ago and left him a voice message. I was using my desk phone. Yesterday, my desk phone rang, and since it doesn't have a caller I.D., I just answered it and not anticipating Freddie. I cant believe this guy, returning a call after 2 weeks, and told me, Anthony sorry I missed your calls, but I didn't erased your message so I can call you back. Then after that he told me to call him back in one hour. After one hour, I called him then again I got his voicemail, so I left him a message that it's been an hour Freddie. The following day (wed. my time) around 9:15 ET, my desk phone rang and then it was Freddie, telling me that he's trying to call me late afternoon yesterday but nobody's answering, I told him that I took a break after I left him a message cause he was not answering his phone. So, this is how my conversation with him goes: DULJOMAN:Congratulations for winning the Trainer of the Year again! FR: Thank you. DULJOMAN: Are you gonna be on Gerry's corner for the fight with Daniel Ponce De Leon? FR: Yes, and I invited him also to go with me at Puerto Rico and train there. But he said that he'll go there if Manny will go there also. DULJOMAN: What are his chances? FR: Gerry is the smoothest boxer right now, clever and efficient. I told James Toney that he's smooth for his size, but Gerry is smoother than him. Gerry is going to be a champ again. DULJOMAN: What is your PERSONAL OPINION about Manny's political aspirations? FR: You know Anthony Duljoman, you cannot serve two masters at the same time. If you ask me, Manny should have waited for all this political thing. How can he be effective for his people if he's out 4-5 months a year for training. And besides he's peaking right now, I dont want it to be wasted. DULJOMAN:Do you think Manny is influenced to run by his so called "friends? advisers?" FR: to be safe, I would say Manny made his own decision. DULJOMAN: What do you mean by "to be safe?" FR: I don't know Duljoman. You can see all the signs. DULJOMAN: Let's talk about the Solis fight,(before I could throw my question, he's aleady talking) FR: Promoter approves the fight, I'd like to see the tapes first. So I don't like this fight, and it will not give any meaning to Manny's career right now. This is not suitable for Manny. DULJOMAN: Is there a $5M for this fight? FR: I dont know, I think the contract was signed, but didn't see it yet, but I doubt if there'll be $5M for this fight. DULJOMAN: Freddie do you remember when I talked to you at Florida, and you told me that it's impossible for you to train Oscar cause that means you gonna be exclusive for him. You said that you can't leave Manny and all your guys at Wild Card Gym just like that, and you told me that Manny is your main guy, and you're like a father figure to him... At what point, you decided to accept Dela Hoya's offer? FR: It was hard Anthony, it involved a lot of pondering. First, the offer is good, right? Second, Oscar has been very professional approaching me, telling me that he believed that I can help him. And he told me I can bring my boys to Puerto Rico to train with him. That includes Manny (of course), Gerry, Peter, Boom2x, etc... And then, it's an opportunity for me to train one of the most successful boxers today. And you know what, your Manny approved it, and he was one of the first guys to know about it, and he congratulated me. DULJOMAN: How was your acting career in the Philippines? FR: You mean the San Miguel Beer? Uuhhh, it was fun, I got to talk to Morales, meet a lot of people. It was fun, me and Morales became friends. DULJOMAN:Are you going back to the Philippines for another commercials? FR:No, I mean, I'll go back there to promote World Cup with Oscar. Maybe June, after the May 5 fight. DULJOMAN: Is Bobby Pacquiao fighting again in the U.S? FR: I heard they lined him up for a Texas fight but Im not sure... Duljoman I got to go... dial toneeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee... Duljoman: Hello? Hello? Heelloo? Thanks to Duljo Barangay Tanods... and to Bobot Candy. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Anthony 'Duljoman' Andales. |
