Brilliant Brit fighting for family back home PhilBoxing.com Fri, 27 Sep 2013 ![]() Darren Askew. Askew came to Australia with nothing but a hopeful dream to get his already aspiring boxing career back on track. After suffering 6 defeats from 12 fights on home soil, Askew and partner dream of becoming a champion. Now 2 years on after making the 24 hr flight ?down under?, Askew is set to fight for the QLD junior welterweight state title on Smithy brings the big fights 5 on October 4. Askew, who is coming off the back of 2 impressive victories in his new adopted town of Toowoomba, is set to challenge Mark Ramirez for his title. Askew stated that, ?I?ve boxed for a few titles before back home in the UK, but I was always the challenger taking the fight on late notice, this time it?s different. I?ve had 12 weeks to prepare for this fight; I?m fit and more determined than ever before. Both my Father and Grandfather were champion boxers back home and I?m really looking to replicate their feats out here in Australia. ? An underlying motivation for Askew is the tragic hearing of both his parents? back home battle with cancer. Askew touched on their battles, ?My Mum is in remission for breast cancer and my Dad has recently being diagnosed with prostate cancer and underwent the surgery just over the weekend, so he is really on his first steps to recovery. When I enter the ring to fight, I come out to You?ll never walk alone, which is of course the famous song that the Liverpool football club are renowned for, but it really has a deep meaning for me being out here in Australia alone in my fights as well as my parents constant battles with cancer and that with our support, they?ll never walk alone. My trunks also support the breast cancer foundation logo and colors as well as the prostate cancer ones.? Askew finished in saying, ?I?m heading back in 3 weeks after my fight to see my family, and I hope to take that belt back with me. I?m really fortunate I have a great team out here under the guidance of Brendon Smith and all the boys at Smithy?s gym and of course the love and support from my girl Chelsea.?
