EDRIN DAPUDONG'S NOV. 9 TITLE DEFENSE CANCELLED BY SOUTH AFRICAN PROMOTER PhilBoxing.com Fri, 13 Sep 2013 ![]() Kidapawan City - The first world title defense of North Cotabato's first boxing champion, Edrin "The Sting" Dapudong, the IBO World Junior Bantamweight titlist, has been jeopardized by a person who has absolutely nothing to do with the champion or the fight. South Africa's Golden Gloves Promotions, which staged Dapudong's two fights against Gideon Buthelezi in Johannesburg has informed the champion's camp that the Nov. 9 first title defense against Zolani Tete has been cancelled. The cancellation of the title fight came as a shocker to the Filipino champion's camp which was in the thick of the preparation for the match up against Tete and has just hired the services of two southpaws to be the sparring partners of Dapudong. Shona Mac Taggart, the manager of Golden Gloves Promotions, initially blamed the champion's camp for its failure to respond to a letter from promoter Rodney Berman. When informed that Dapudong's camp never received any letter from Golden Gloves and that it had already forwarded to South Africa a signed contract for the Nov. 9 fight, Mac Taggart found out that the letter was sent to a Peter Chanliong who reportedly represented Solar Sports. In a message to matchmaker Gabriel Elorde, Jr., Mac Taggart said: "Found the mail to Rodney. He never came back to him therefore Rodney presumed he was going ahead in the Philippines. Who is this guy?" Based on the emails exchanged between Berman and Chanliong, it now appears that Chanliong negotiated with Golden Gloves for the staging of Dapudong's title defense in the Philippines. In a message sent to Berman, Chanliong said: "Hi Rodney, Thank you for your email. I am in LA right now with my family and will be back on Monday. Given your input in your email, I will organize my thoughts when I return and come back to you. Look forward to see if we can get something done. Best regards, Peter." Berman, in his response to Chanliong, set the terms and conditions for the staging of the fight in the Philippines and when Chanliong failed to respond to the letter, Golden Gloves cancelled the Nov. 9 engagement between Dapudong and Zolani. With the cancellation of the Nov. 9 title fight, Braveheart Boxing Club which manages Dapudong, immediately informed ALA Promotions which holds promotional rights over the world champion of the development. ALA Promotions was asked whether it would be interested in promoting Dapudong's title defense by December this year. Should ALA Promotions decide to forgo with its option to promote the fight, negotiations would be started with other groups for the staging of the first IBO World Championship fight in the Philippines. In the meantime, Braveheart Boxing has consulted with its lawyers to determine the legal action which would be brought up against Chanliong for his interference in a contract which led to the cancellation of the world title fight. Dapudong, 27, a product of the grassroots boxing program of North Cotabato started when I was Governor in 1998, won the International Boxing Organization (IBO) world title with a first round knockout of South African Gideon Buthelezi in Johannesburg June 15 this year. It was actually the second meeting between Buthelezi and Dapudong. They first fought in November last year in a fight apparently won by Dapudong but which was given to Buthelezi by spit decision. Even the South African promoter Berman admitted this in his message to Chanliong when he said: "If you are not aware I in fact readily gave him a rematch as I felt he won the first fight against Buthelezi!!" By knocking out Buthelezi in the first round, Dapudong ended a 24-title fight losing streak for Filipino fighters in South Africa and crowned himself as North Cotabato's first world champion.
