Mayweather vs. Alvarez : Pinoy Boxing Insiders make their pick on "The One."

PhilBoxing.com

Fight Week is upon us and the biggest event in boxing that is Floyd Mayweather Jr. versus Saul ?Canelo? Alvarez is only a couple of days away.

The fight between the two undefeated stars, dubbed as ?The One,? is the year?s first major pay-per-view and mega boxing event. The sold-out ?Oasis of Boxing?, the MGM Grand Garden Arena will once again host Mayweather Jr. as he defends his lofty status as the sport?s best against a young and strong Mexican superstar this Saturday.

A quick survey within the country?s boxing circles favor the more experienced Mayweather Jr. over the young Alvarez despite their almost identical number of fights. But a number of them did not also discount the possibility of an upset, one of the biggest in the sport if ever.

Here are their picks:

Manolo ?Chino? Trinidad ? Senior Sports News Correspondent for GMA Network: ?Floyd pa rin.
(It still will be Floyd.)?

?He is too wily for a rushed contender in Canelo. Floyd by mastery but I am not discounting an upset especially is Saul is able to bring a trap for the slippery Floyd.?

Rene Bonsubre Jr. ? Contributing Editor for Philboxing.com, Contributor for Cebu Daily News/ Ringside Physician:

?Mayweather has the skill level to win handily by decision but I'm not counting out Alvarez to land a KO punch.?

?Beating Mayweather will be hard, very hard, even in his later years. Shane Mosley made him wobble but Floyd still won convincingly. So, will a younger and stronger opponent like Canelo be able to not just catch, but put him down for good? Personally, I want to see a 1 L on Floyd's record, but it will be very difficult and frustrating task, maybe team Canelo studied the film of De la Hoya-Mayweather and found something or maybe not. Mayweather has the skill level to win handily by decision but I'm not counting out Alvarez to land a KO punch.?

Dr. Ed de la Vega: Photographer/Writer for Philboxing.com and Boxing cut man: ?Floyd Mayweather Jr. by U.D.?

?My heart is for Canelo and I hope he can use his size and power to his advantage all through 12 rounds and win by a late KO but I also know that defensive skills like shoulder rolls, rapid footwork and hand speed favors Floyd Mayweather Jr. I also know that boxing is a business and if the fight ends up up very close, the Nevada judges will give it to their boy. He brings so much money to Vegas and they can?t afford not to make him win.?

Anson Tiu Co ? Boxing promoter ? Shape-Up Boxing Promotions: ?I?d still pick Floyd. ?

?Experientially he is far advanced compared to Canelo. So much used to pressure packed events like these, although I prefer Canelo to win. I think this is the start of their trilogy.?

Marvin Somodio- Boxing trainer/ Conditioning coach for The Wild Card Gym: ?Sa tingin ko Floyd, Unanimous decision.? (I think Floyd will win by Unanimous Decision)

?Hilaw pa si Canelo. Kung masaktan niya si Floyd, baka isang beses lang tapos di na maulit kaya kailangan kung masaktan niya isang suntok lang tulog na kasi magaling mag adjust kaagad si Floyd ng laro.?

(Canelo is still raw. If he hurts Floyd, he may only be able to do it at one point and he may not be able to follow it up. That is why if he catches him, he should put him to sleep because if not Floyd will adjust and he is good at adjusting his game.)

Edito Villamor- Chief Boxing trainer for ALA Promotions: ?Floyd by Unanimous Decision.

?He is a skillful and intelligent fighter compare to Canelo.?

Nonito Donaire Sr. ? Boxing trainer: ?I pick Canelo for this fight, by KO in the later rounds and if Canelo will focus on the body and does not fight Floyd on the distance.?

Merlito Sabillo ? WBO Minimumweight Champion: ?Sa tingin ko si Floyd ang mananalo.? (I think Floyd will win.)

?Mautak kasi eh, pero wag lang kumpiyansa si Floyd kay Canelo kasi may kamao rin si Canelo. Sa taas lang ng ring malalaman ang lahat pagdating ng labanan nila.?

(Floyd is shrewd but he should not be overconfident against Canelo because Canelo can punch. We will only know the result on top of that ring when that fight comes.)

Denver Cuello: Professional boxer: (He spent time at Alvarez?s gym in Mexico where he saw him train up close.) ?Ako po gusto ko manalo si Canelo.? (I want Canelo to win.)

?Malakas si Canelo at malaki at madami sumuntok. Sa akin lang knockout, kasi may lakas ang Canelo, ang Floyd magulang lang sa laban.?

(Canelo is strong and throws a lot of punches. To me, he will win by knockout because Canelo has strength while Floyd is only shrewd during a fight.)

The fight will be carried on PPV by Showtime Sports in the States and by local TV networks in their respective countries all over the world. In the Philippines, GMA 7 will broadcast the fight and Trinidad and Cuello will provide on-air commentary.
