FINAL LINE-UP FOR SEA GAMES BEING DELIBERATED

PhilBoxing.com

Tamayo.
MANILA (PNA) -- The Philippines is sending a ?fighting? national contingent of no more than 200 athletes to the coming 27th Southeast Asian Games in December in Myanmar.

This was revealed by chef de mission and SEA Games task force head, retired Col. Jeff Tamayo in Friday?s SCOOP Sa Kamayan session at the Kamayan Restaurant-Padre Faura.

Tamayo, head of the soft tennis association, said the task force, which includes no less than Philippine Sports Commission chair Richie Garcia and his Philippine Olympic Committee counterpart Tom Carrasco as members along with Romeo Magat of lawn tennis and Paul Ycasas of the PSC monitoring group, has imposed a very stringent qualifying criteria as to who would make up the delegation, which is one of the reasons in the delay of finalizing its composition.

?The criteria is only the sure gold medalists and potential gold medalists, on the strength of assessment by the NSAs themselves, should earn the trip to Myanmar, no less,? Tamayo said.

?But as usual, despite coming up with the criteria and announcing this to the national sports associations concerned, still many who do not fall within the criteria have been recommended,? he lamented.

?So we have to review all the recommendations over and over again, which naturally take much of the task force?s time,? Tamayo said.

?Another reason for the delay of submitting the list in number is some NSAs have yet to complete their qualifying trials for inclusion in the national contingent,? he explained. ?That is why we sent a message to all the NSAs whose sports are in the SEA Games calendar to be responsible in making decisions as to who from their associations are eligible to go.?

Tamayo said he had to write the Myanmar SEA Games Organizing Committee a letter asking for the extension of the deadline for the submission of entry by number, which actually was last week yet.

?Myanmar granted our request, so not later than next week, we will be sending them a list of some 170 to 180. The rest will follow after the qualifying trials of several NSAs shall have been completed,? Tamayo, who appeared in the SCOOP session alone, explained.

?Kakaiba kasi itong SEA Games this year in many ways. Magulo ang naging simula because of the addition and subtraction of many events, which actually is not new as this has been going on since the birth of the biennial event, the task force head noted.

?At ngayon lang tayo nag-reklamo for obvious reason although sa tutoo lang, the addition of events to the calendar went within the bounds of three categories being followed historically that is Olympic sports, SEA Games sports and indigenous sports,? he pointed out.

?Immediately, we reacted with some of our leaders recommending for a boycott. Yung iba said we should send a token delegation, which in the eyes of the task force, was not the best way to see how sports should be seen,? he observed. "Hindi maganda, lalo na sa SEA Games na parang isang pamilya.?

?Kaya nga for the first time in the history of our SEA Games participation, no less than the chairs of the POC (Carrasco) and the PSC (Garcia) are sitting in the task force,? Tamayo said. ?Siguro naman after we have finalized what kind of delegation we are sending, eh wala nang magre-reklamo.?
