REY PEREZ BEATEN IN WBC SILVER BANTAMWEIGHT TITLE FIGHT
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sun, 07 Jul 2013
Filipino Rey Perez put on a game stand but was beaten by Mexican prospect Andres Gutierrez who retained his WBC bantamweight Silver title with an impressive performance, winning by a unanimous decision although no scores were apparently announced before the Mexican?s hometown crowd at the Auditorio General Arteaga in Queretaro, Sunday morning, Manila Time.
The 19 year old Gutierrez who is promoted by Saul ?Canelo? Alvarez put on what boxingscene.com said was a ?dominant performance where he displayed his solid skills.?
Against the Filipino however, Gutierrez who has shown he can be very aggressive instead fought a measured fight against Perez who was considered a more technical fighter and not a big puncher.
Both fighters started aggressively with shots to the head and body with Perez battling Gutierrez on even terms in the first two rounds. But boxingscene.com reported that?s as good as it would get for the Filipino fighter as it was Gutierrez who would take over the fight.
The champion pressed the action from then on and connected with combinations, capitalizing on his hand speed.
Gutierrez landed some solid uppercuts but Perez stood his ground to the amazement of fight fans as well as the champion himself.
By round six Perez?s face was showing the damage inflicted by Gutierrez and he slowed down considerably. The Mexican continued to pressure and trap Perez against the ropes and unloaded combinations as Perez could only cover up and try to move out of trouble.
It was the first time that the 19 year old Gutierrez who won his last three fights by knockouts went twelve rounds and for a fighter who previously showed he could brawl demonstrated he could also box.
With the win Gutierrez improved to 27-0-1 with 22 knockouts while the 22 year old Perez who was coming off a very close twelve round loss to Hugo Fidel Cazares in a clash for the vacant WBC International super bantamweight title last January 26 dropped to 17-4 with 3 knockouts.
