THE CUELLO DISASTER - NOW IT'S TIME FOR THE WBC TO RISE UP AND SHINE

PhilBoxing.com

A fellow writer, Rich Mazon of Philboxing.com sent me a text. It said: ?Doc, tinakbuhan pala si Denver and Aljoe ng promoter. Ni isang kusing wala. Kaya double whammy sila, talo na, wala pang naiuwi.? (Doc, Denver and Aljoe were defrauded by the promoter. They got a double whammy. They didn?t only lose, on top of that they didn?t get a penny)

How in the world can that happen?

Was the opportunity to fight enough to supercede all the other important things that are part and parcel of fighting in a title fight?

As far as I know it is the promoter?s responsibility to provide the boxer, the manager and his trainer round trip tickets to and from the venue. In few instances, even the cut-man gets a free ride. That is the standard of the fight game!

I am not privy with the fight contract of Cuello, but if his team did not include the above in the contract, then they should not be crying now and telling everyone that they had to use their own money to get back home.

Whining to the media does not do them any good. In fact they appear amateurish, which they are not.

Another thing, why in the world didn?t they get paid after the fight?

Isn?t it the responsibility of the commission in charge of the fight to hold on to the purses and properly distribute them to the fighters right after the weigh-in or after the fight?

Who the hell are in the Dubai Boxing Commission? Better still, does Dubai even have a commission?

If they do, then the members of the commission shortchanged Cuello and Jaro much like the promoter did. They were negligent and didn?t do their jobs. They all deserved to be flogged publicly, a punishment that is common in that part of the world even for minor offenses.

Having all the above said and done, I now like to call the attention of the World Boxing Council (WBC).

WBC must do what is part of their responsibilities as the sanctioning body of the Zhong-Cuello title fight.

Don Jose or Mauricio Sulaiman must immediately act decisively. They should use their influence and demand that the promoters pay the purse of Cuello and refund all the expenses they incurred in going to Dubai.

After all I am sure as the sanctioning body, WBC got their sanctioning fees paid in full. Otherwise, they would not have allowed the fight to go on as scheduled.

This is the only way to settle this issue - an issue that would not have occurred if Team Cuello paid attention to details.
